What's the point of having a Prestige Banker?

To be honest with you, I didn't change my behaviour much except for no longer paying with cash..... Even an R18 cappuccino goes on my card. Also, I get cashback@till rather than ATM so i do have cash on me for emergency .

The premier banking suite that you call in to is far better than I have had even for banks in Uk or US. They follow up things properly and so prefer it to going to branch

I'm on platinum myself but I use my credit card for everything...so my earning potential is limited in that regard. I refuse to use my debit card - that is the salary/debit order account.

That probably explains it....for me its cheque card for everything, and you get points for things like using cash@till rather than ATM, and smart device contract and also buying things online, all of which I do anyway

My credit card is only on tier 2

Even so, you are probably spending more on your card than most of us do. I get upwards of R300 in combined rewards for my discovery card every month. From October to the end of April, I have earned R1100 in Discovery Miles (which can be converted into pretty much anything), R530 in pick n pay vouchers, and something like R1000 in cash back.

Man, wtf is going on? I thought I was on top of eBucks and knew what was cooking, but now this line of yours has had me checking my own details on the fhb website.

Turns out I'm tier 5 on my cheque card (which is platinum), but only tier 1 on my credit card (which is private client). What's all that about? Aren't they linked? And does this mean that purchases on my cc receive a lot less bucks than those on my cheque?

Sorry for the thread derail btw, but these banks really like to complicate the buggery out of you.

That is exactly what it means, and that is exactly why I moved from FNB to Discovery, because Discovery's rewards are much easier to earn. It took me 4 months when I was at FNB to save up enough eBucks for a R300 voucher, now I earn R300 per month.

I've actually just got a discovery card this week as we have vitality and I thought it would be good to have.

I earn a decent amount of ebucks through my cheque card though, like over 11,000 last month, so goodness knows the best way to move forward and maximise my rewards. I can't imagine it would be good to spend time getting my discovery card up to the equivalent of my cheque card and even then would it be better in the long term?

At the moment I get my petrol from engen, airtime through FNB, pay bills at checkers etc and reckon I have a good thing going.

I think unisa needs to do a 4 years honours degree on these things.

You moved because of a better rewards programme? :wtf:

Rewards (and this is why eBucks is so awesome) is that stuff I collect while not thinking about them.

And that is the key.. .if you have to go out of your way to earn, then its not worth it

Well by saving R100 per month in banking fees and then earning about 4 times as much rewards, I am getting R2000 to R3000 in value per year, more than I was. Still think its not worth it?

The cashback that I have received so far has covered the cost of the card for the entire year. And the pick n pay vouchers reduced the grocery bill for a kruger park trip by 33%. And I could use the discovery miles to buy a new 2TB hard drive, if I wanted. That is from having the card since October. That is easily worth it to me.

Compare that to getting a few measly ebucks if I danced on my head during the full moon.

If you cant speak to them over the damn phone!!! You must make an appointment to go and see them. Bollocks!!!

It's marketing. It creates an illusion of exclusivity and may appeal to impressionable people (amongst others), yet offers few significant benefits, and few costs to the bank.

Nedbank seem to be ok, investec are very good.
Some time back i had to do a largish transfer / payment late one night - to my horror some transfers into my account had not cleared.
Called investec & they advanced money into my account to cover the transfer - one call (help !!!) to them, within a few minutes they called back to tell me funds were available for the transfer.

Interestingly, on another note, I got a Capitec card recently.
A while back a mate asked me if I could fetch him from town. It was about 1.30am
I left home, but discovered the car was almost empty. Stopped at the closest petrol station & asked them to fill the car.
I went into the shop at the petrol station, bought smokes & some other things, then tried to pay for fuel & purchases inside the shop with one transaction.
The card was declined by the speedpoint machine.
It had never been used via speedpoint for fuel, only atm transactions.
So i dashed over to the atm inside the shop (std bank)at the petrol station to draw cash - slip came out stating there was some "technical difficulty" with my institution & the transaction was not possible.
Rather embarrassed, I dashed over the road to an absa atm - "institution temporarily unavailable"
Back to the speedpoint machine. Lady tried to process the transaction - same problem.
We wait and wait. In the interim i am darting back & forth between various atm's praying Capitec would come online.
15 mins later I call Capitec. Lady at Capitec says she will get back to me.
10 mins later no call back.

So there I am, about R800 fuel already in the car & about another R100 in purchases from the shop - & I cant pay.
I tell the lady at the till I will leave the car & my drivers license, go home, get cash & come back. Call a cab company, fastest they can get a car to me will be a further 15 minutes.
It will be quicker to walk back home. Incensed, I call Capitec & hurl abuse, telling the poor woman, thanks to Capitec, i now have to leave my car in the forecourt, hand the keys over to the petrol attendant & walk home at 2 in the morning to fetch cash.
Some kids pull into the petrol station. I offer them R100 to take me back home 5 mins away.
Off we go. Capitec call back offering to arrange & pay for a cab. Tell them no thanks, I have a ride.
Get home. Give the kids R150 for their efforts (& trust). Capitec call again to check I am safe at home - tell them I am fine - but furious.
Take the other car, go to petrol station & give them cash (by now i dare not wave another card at them).
Capitec call back, a new person now. He apologizes profusely & tells me there was an unexpected server issue that has caused the problem. Phone battery dies, collect my mate in town (also thinking he can drive the other car back), discover he is too pissed to even recognize the nose on his own face.
Drop mate off at his place, go home & get into bed.

Next morning see a number of missed calls from an unknown number. Phone rings. Manager from my Capitec branch.
Tells me they are aware of the problem I had the previous night & someone from their head office will be calling me shortly.
I go off to pick up a friend to go collect the car at the petrol station.
Capitec head office calls. The guy tells me they are fully aware of the problem & what I went through & apologizes once more & tells me they would like to offer some form of compensation. Expecting a fruit basket or similar I tell him not to worry.
No, he insists that they offer me compensation for what I went through & the expenses I incurred as a result of their server issue. He goes on to tell me that they picked up the 3 (or 4, dont remember) attempted speedpoint transactions & would like to credit my account to the same value (a little over R1000).
Gobsmacked, I tell the guy, that while I very much appreciate the offer - & that it is is quite unheard of in the banking industry (in my experience), it is really not necessary & I do not expect it at all. He then tells me again, that is is unacceptable that I incurred additional expenses as a result of their technical problems. I tell him that the reality is I paid some kids R150 to take me back home & at most R50 in fuel to pick up a friend in one car to go collect the other, so at the top end, the ordeal cost me perhaps R200 max..
Other phone rings, see it's an urgent call, tell the Capitec guy I have to take the call, but thanks for his concern & offer. Take the other call, while on the call the mobile beeps with a message. Capitec have credited my account with R500 - impressive.
Next day I have to go into Capitec to pick up a security token generator.
Manager sees me, steers me to her desk, gets coffee, tells me she is terribly sorry & hoped the matter has been resolved by their head office. Tell her what transpired & that I am pretty impressed with their service in offering to get & pay for a taxi to get me home, checking I was home ok, & then passing the credit on my account. She laughs & says to me "damn, when a bank offers free cash - grab it". Get the security token generator (usually a R50 charge), she says - no charge on this.

In all, pretty damn impressive customer service on the part of Capitec.

grantza: trolling? Banks aren't like this...

i have never known a bank to really make an effort in apologizing when they have screwed up - there is usually some long convoluted story as to why they are not to blame.

they clearly realized i was incensed, and i presume from their side they noticed the amount the speed point was trying to get authorization on - and then my dashing back & forth between atm's.

evidently they got the message loud & clear that i was beyond pissed off at having to leave my car as security at the petrol station as a result of their technical problems

it's not so much people having bankers, the bankers are part of the package - a little like itemized billing is to a cell phone contract
