I tried to use my MTN data card last night but I couldn't do anything on the net. It connects but no or very little data transfer then it stops.

Two weeks ago it was 3G and HSDPA that didn't want to work, now it's GPRS and EDGE as well.

I get Full GPRS/EDGE signal and only 1bar 3G/HSDPA.

Now what can I do? I got the data contract with Data card only for internet but now I can't use it anymore.

I used it all yesterday evening and it was FLYING like it hasn't flown before. Not one timeout or server not found. In fact the latency was also great. Best it has been for months.
(Also in Cape Town)

Check your system/data balance.

Piesang, I'm in Cape Town and noticed the same thing for past two weeks. Just got worse and worse to the point where I think they have capped speeds or network traffic even more. And I'm close to the towers in CBD.

According to MTN nothing has changed. Although I did get billed an extra R700 which I went over (apparently). After phoning and querying I was told it was their mistake and that the system isn't automated. *scratches head* In other words it doesn't automatically switch over every month and so you get charged out of bundle rates. MTN acknowledged "Oh, yeah, sorry, it was our mistake .. sometimes our system doesn't switch over" and credited me the money off bill. :)

Amazing! In this modern world of technology and innovation how a system like MTN can do that. *thinks back all the months where bills didn't make sense, and now do* :)

I am in the Highveldt area in Centurion, and speeds had been very slow for the past few evenings (it took a few minutes just to open Google last night), but it clears up at around 11Pm. I never experienced this sort of thing when I was still living in Muckleneuk (about 20km's away). Is it just my bad luck, or had anybody else in Centurion area experienced something similar?

I also had very slow speeds last night. started at about 19:00

Was playing WoW and my ping jumped to 10k then 13k. I just switched it off, ussually gets better later on. Strange that it happened the same time last week also. No idea why.... But I just know if I get back home now it will be fine again

I am generally happy with the speeds and the connection. At least its more stable than Vodacom's 3G / HSDPA.

Although, I do get a 'invalid card' message now and then on my E220.

And then of course a billing problem which I am still trying to sort out after 2 fracking months!!!!
In that department Vodacom was better, never had a problem in the 6 years of being with Vodacom, but from the get-go porting to MTN, their billing has been ----.

Could be software conflict or maybe the card just had it :)

I'll try and look for the programe it conflicts with.

I've tried it again last night. Using my Data card with my laptop. Last night the speeds were fine.

I got about 550kb/s max.

I cannot browse the or send and receive emails AT ALL between 7pm and 10pm on weekdays.... I'm in Raslouw in Centurion.

I was in the Drakensberg area near Underberg last week for a week and had exactly the same problem there...

It seems as if all the free minutes and Mxit people jam the network between those hours...

It's funny that MTN doesn't mention that their network is useless in peak hours for data users when they lure you into a 2 year contract with a Laptop and a data card for R999.00 per month... But if I remember right, they've been upgrading the network since 1653 BC. It seems it doesn't filter through to my area...

My contract expires the end of the year and I'm leaving! Getting myself some nice ADSL form Axxess.

Dan is ek's klaar met MTN vir ALTYD!

I complained on Hellopeter and MTN actually phone me 2 weeks later and promised me a Yagi antenna!!! Needless to say, I never heard from then again...

What broke my heart was when the rep that called me told me that I musn't expect much of the towers in my area since they are not 3G enabled... Helloooo DUH!!!! I had 4/5 signal strenght when I signed the contract!!! Now I still have no 3G at all since October last year... I still pay my account though... Every month... Never missed a payment... Never... not once... O yes, MTN even overcharged me once with R360.00... They did a refund... Only when I alerted them to the unfortunate mistake...

I don't care anymore! I pay a grand a month for EDGE... Not for long anymore!
