Is it just me or is their an influx in these cookie warnings? Why is that?

I should be clear I am fully aware of they are and what they do I am just lost why now all of a sudden do they get all the attention? Many of the sites even go so far as to require you to agree to their use of cookies before they hide the banner and allow you to navigate the website.

Disclaimer: I value my privacy. I use things like NoScript, AdBlock, HTTPS Everywhere, Ghostery, and VPNs. However these days cookies is pretty much a requirement for a modern web experience. Plus, even if we banished cookies entirely there are much more advanced and effective server side tracking methods available that are far more difficult to avoid so I do not see why cookies are so in the spotlight lately.

I also noticed this. Quite annoying.

Issue is, POPI has been "coming" for years now, and there is still no official start dates for it.

Not really. POPI describes what every responsible online-presence should do with PII data. We implemented POPI compliance back in 2014 as we always felt very strong about PII and user's privacy - so for us it was a good thing it surfaced. Other online sites (in my words: anyone who uses Effective Measures and 3rd party cookies) don't give a crap about their user's privacy and the use of PII.

If POPI was signed into law, can you imagine the number of law-suits going on right now due to non-compliance issues, data-leaks and security? The majority of local websites can't even get SSL properly installed, never mind data-encryption and password storage (and let's not go down the onselling of data).

POPI is a good thing. At the end of the day it effects everyone that uses a computer. It'll change things for the better. The main issue is, a lot of people will ignore POPI untill it is signed into law, and I get the feeling most expect that to never happen.
