I think they know this, thats why they want regulations instead of just blocking it on their network.
 
My MTN contract is expiring at end of the month.

This is f***ing ridiculous. According to this logic every service on the internet is freeloading. We pay for our data is has nothing to do with them what we want to use it for.

Would it help if we email our service providers (AKA VC and MTN) to express our views as customers.?

I mean, I can only assume that FB will tell them to FO if they want them to pay licence fees, then if the were to stop the service on the network we could always jump ship to Cell C. I suppose there are other apps but I would hate to support a company that stoops as low as these levels.

It is this kind of mentality that stops progression...

For many years, MTN and the other providers have been making millions with the absurdly priced sms'. Now that the tables have turned, MTN (and Vodacom) cry foul because of the loss of easy revenue. What they don't get is that the demand for data has increased significantly and that is where their new profit margins should be. Sadly, it seems that only Cell C is grasping this.

Agree. I'm sure they'd love to point fingers and say, it's not us... Problem is, you can't be the one pushing FOR regulation then say, we're just following the rules.
If MTN, and Vodacom for that matter, really, really had the courage of their convictions, they'd go ahead and block OTT services and let the chips fall where they may. Won't happen. Ever.

However much I want to agree with you and tell MTN and VC to shove it somewhere dark, there is some merit in their arguments. I am not familiar with the details at all, but the telephone companies are required to deliver voice call services at a certain quality in terms of the clarity of sound, dropped calls, etc. VOIP services like Whatsapp and Skype do not. It therefore means that they can give you a best effort service.

The market will probably be happy to accept slightly lower quality at a much lower cost. The incumbents cannot compete with this and would rather offer you the high clarity at the much higher cost.

I foresee that it will be impossible to regulate this. Gov. and Icasa might try to regulate, but it will be almost impossible to regulate. More and more people and companies will convert to VOIP services over the next few years and there is nothing the incumbents can do about it. Cell C has the right strategy. Time to buy some some Blue Label?
