WhatsApp Delays Updated Privacy Policy

WhatsApp has delayed the introduction of a new privacy policy announced earlier this month after confusion and user backlash forced the messaging service to better explain what data it collects and how it shares that information with parent company, Facebook Inc.

“We’ve heard from so many people how much confusion there is around our recent update,” the company wrote Friday in a blog post. “There’s been a lot of misinformation causing concern and we want to help everyone understand our principles and the facts.”

Shame. People are dumb.
Thats true. I mean I had plenty of people think they where gonna post their messages and photos on Facebook:ROFL:
But also once again shows you the lack of courage these guys from the valley have to stick with a principle or idea...

Hmmm... must be quite a substantial number of people who have deleted Whatsapp vs those who downloaded Telegram/Signal, etc, but still kept Whatsapp.

I left the app because I can't have them collecting the kind of information they do on me and then share it with Facebook and co.

See you in the next lifetime whatsapp.

All the people who joined Telegram recently.

I bet a week ago that they would delay it and regroup... But what has been consistent over the last 10 years is Facebook's promises being broken repeatedly around privacy, then they pull back and apologise after being found out. Glad I did not wait for 8th Feb and deleted by WhatsApp account already. Enough is really enough now. They still don't understand that metadata is part of our privacy - but I reckon they'll have a big marketing campaign to convince us that it is all just fine...

India is what scared them, that was the only place WhatsApp actually made any money.

They can steam about how they care about privacy and them not reading messages all they want, for me it always comes back to the fact that one of the first things they did when they took over was disable the encryption on backups.

We all know, it’s common knowledge, that Google analyses everything unencrypted that is stored on Google drive, the most basic reason and the one that would impact users the most would be search indexing, much easier to find what someone is looking for if you know the contents.

Do we truly believe that Facebook is handing over to Google, the conversations of over a billion people and not keeping a copy for themselves. They giving Google metric tons of invaluable data out of the goodness of their own heart and not benefitting immensely from it.

They may not be reading our chats in real time, but I am almost certain those plain text backups are going via WhatsApp servers before heading off to Google.
