WhatsApp doesn’t owe you a thing, Vodacom and MTN

Best article title this week.
Funny how it's the two dinosaurs vodacom and mtn doing this. Their management are stuck in the past.

They cover the majority regarding signal strength, 3G, LTE etc.. in South Africa. Looking at my house's location in Pta east where only Vodacom and Mtn gets 3G, cell-c and telkom mobile edge. So until the time comes where TM and cell-c can provide full cover everywhere we must either stay with VC and Mtn and pay a whatsapp premium if that ever gets to that point, or be on slower networks (area specific) and be happy with low internet speeds.

QFT :

Despite these signals from the market, operators did not respond. And now that SMS revenues are being wiped out, suddenly the regulator must step in?

For a while you got to be the disruptor, Vodacom and MTN, subverting Telkom’s dominance in South African telecommunications. You failed to adapt and now you are becoming the disrupted.

The question is, will you take the route of diminishing returns Telkom followed from 1994 until around 2011, and try to have your prosperity protected through regulation and legislation?

Or will you change with the times before it’s too late?

We shall see, I suppose, we shall see.

A myBB staffer expressing an opinion on a serious issue? Wtf? Is myBB becoming and activist site or something?

WhatsApp works just fine with 2G. You need 3G for other stuff, not for WhatsApp.

I have just come back from remote regions of Namibia, where we just had 2G. WhatsApp worked just fine.

Ja, Whatsapp works with EDGE and GPRS.

A bit slow, but it will work. As long as somebody doesn't clog the link up with masses of pictures etc, it works just fine.

Well it's more a case of a connection for everything, that was what I think he was aiming at. I suppose if you would have a sim with a device just to use whatsapp then yes it works perfect.

Interesting how in Aus, the carriers allow unlimited calls and unlimited SMS's, the biggest cost is the data. The plans scale with increasing the data allocated.

MTN and Vodacom recently made headlines when representatives from the companies suggested that WhatsApp should compensate them for using their networks.
Is it Whastapp using Vodacom and MTN's networks or is it their clients using the networks?
