WhatsApp must be investigated – MTN

Ag Shampies.

And how much profit has MTN made by investing in SA?

Hardly doing it for altruistic reasons

lol MTN.

Why would WhatsApp care about some third rate provider in the arm pit of Africa when the first world has no issues it with?

Just goes to show how outdated MTN's thinking is. Maybe they should focus on fixing their shoddy network before looking at ways to litigate profit?

It is not like Whatsapp is making millions. I have never paid for it and have been using it for over 3 years. On the other hand, MTN is declaring huge profits. So this is very rich coming from MTN.

Nyati you muppet...

They don't give a shyte about your little butthurt, plus I as a customer am paying for the data being used so what more do you want?

“We need to find a way of working with those players because they are providing services that our customers are looking for. We just need have an arrangement that is beneficial for both parties.”

Translated:

“We need laws to force those people to charge more money to clients, so that MTN can also make billions from this app. The law must only be beneficial to MTN and Whatsapp, screw the customer!”

Without these over-the-top players I would not need a data bundle from the like of MTN in the first place.

The solution is easy - stop selling internet bandwidth on your network.
No more whatsapp and people will be forced to use the phone as a phone and sms's...

He is smoking good stuff. They did not complain when the internet came out and were able to sell bandwidth at extreme costs.

This sounds a bit like Monochoice complaining about Netflix.

The real reason is so obvious that it makes them look like liars.

Uhm... Simple remark made by a company.

“You have these players which are getting huge benefit out of an industry without making any investment. How do we level the playing fields?” chief executive Mteto Nyati told Fin24.

...

“What have these over the top players invested in South Africa? Zero,” said Nyati.

Investment is by no means only money in purpose to gain. To quote,

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/investment

a devoting, using, or giving of time, talent, emotional energy, etc., as for a purpose or to achieve something

How many active WhatsApp users are their in SA and why do they use WhatsApp?

The problem which MTN have is that they in their own opinion have no advantage or gain with WhatsApp being used on their network. Herein are many issues… not to be discussed by me, but actually WhatsApp is contributing to any network on which the application is installed.

MTN simply wants to smell the green.

My view is that those services have been designed in such a way so they are so customer friendly. The fact that they end up being zero-rated is a different matter, but if you look at the uptake of WhatsApp, it’s so easy for the customer

This Nyati is an idiot. The logic - or lack thereof - is astounding.

lol MTN.

Why would WhatsApp care about some third rate provider in the arm pit of Africa when the first world has no issues it with?

Uhh, the whole net neutrality argument was that telecoms operators in the USA had the exact same issue...

You have to regulate them because clearly they’re making a huge amount of revenue on top of the infrastructure that the operators have paid for. Somehow they have to contribute towards the building of this infrastructure,” Nyati argued.

Infrastructure which the customers are paying for. We pay for our data, so what's the issue MTN

But if you don't want people to use Whatsapp on your network why not block it and see people leaving in droves. What is the difference between Whatsapp and other apps which use your infrastructure. They are all OTT players. If I use a a GPS app that is OTT, you might as well switch of data.

Sounds like they are worried about becoming a dumb pipe.

Too bad.

:wtf: this is trying to blackmail whatsapp...

...and whatsapp will just ignore him. The green-eyed monster is not a good thing to have.

And if MTN decide to block whatsapp traffic on their network, their users will migrate.

Just a load of hot air.

Besides, the user is already paying for the data consumed by whatsapp, what more would MTN want? They can jolly well code their own whatsapp instant messenger platform for use on their own network only, but I guess that would be too much effort...
