WhatsApp remains dominant in South Africa

We are clearly a bit out of step with the world as Signal downloads were over 50 million whilst Telegram only hit 25 million. Yet in SA Most of my additional 40 contacts who arrived were on Telegram with only 12 on Signal. Part from two contacts all my regular contacts are on Telegram now. I deleted my WhatsApp account a few days back but I suspect many have not yet actually deleted their WhatsApp accounts. Also wondering if WhatsApp will push through with the threat to delete accounts on 8th Feb as a few of my friends did not accept the new conditions. I've also seen a sharp uptick of friends joining MeWe network and even a few South African groups have been establishing, suggesting to me many are also casting around to ditch their Facebook accounts. It's good that our eyes are opening more to alternatives. I'm sort of pitying advertisers though who are totally conditioned to paying to push adverts in - how are they going to adjust to decentralised social media...

Duh Whatsapp remains dominant as it is a bigger platform and has been around longer. But let's see in a few months.

Those tweets of WhatsApp are going around. The infographics which just merely says WhatsApp can't see your data etc, but there policy actually still remains the same. It's for this reason I think people are staying. They're basically looking for anything to just stay where they are as it's tedious to move according to them.

Most people just don't care these days.
Some do not want to jump ship, because everyone is "still" on WhatsApp and your older family members are still using WhatsApp, because it is familiar and do not want to change over because of this policy change.
If I ask my grams to leave WhatsApp for Telegram or Signal, not gonna happen.

Bah whatevs. Netscape, IE, then Chrome.
It's whatever works for the masses at the right time.

Old people should be used to this, by now. Weren't they all on Blackberry Messenger and was forced off towards Whatsapp?

When all my contacts are on Telegram I have no use for Whatsapp anymore.

Much ado about nothing IMO:

The alternatives are not always better:
Messaging platform Signal said on Friday it was experiencing "technical difficulties" as it worked to accommodate millions of new users.

Some users reported messages failing to send on both the mobile and desktop apps for several hours.

The company has seen a huge uptick in interest since its rival WhatsApp unveiled new privacy terms last week.

On Twitter, Signal said it had added servers "at a record pace" and was working to restore service.

Anyone is going to struggle if you're adding about five times your usual capacity in a single week...

The ANC is dominant in SA too, doesn't mean its the best thing...
