How do the ticks on iPhone work?

I notice that it can sit at 1 tick for hours, as opposed to Android that goes though instantly.

Sometimes after hours, it goes to 2 grey - but not blue (read). Could this be when the person has swiped down in their notifications ?

One tick - received on the server
Two ticks - delivered to the handset (or just notification)

When message is very short, the entire content can be seen in notification area. Who is going to open it in Whatsapp then? It is why 2 grey ticks can stay long.

That's how it's meant to be.

I've experienced the same as Dolby.
If you message an iPhone user from an Android device it stays 1 tick for ages until it's read and then only goes blue.

And that's just how I like it.

I have noticed that sometimes my whatsapp only retrieves the messages after I enter whatsapp. That might explain the ticks
