WhatsApp watch groups drive fear

Yup, breeding grounds of fear mongering and racism.

Didn’t need a study to figure that out.

The original goal of “someone jumped over the wall next door” very quickly devolves into “a man has walked down the street”.

I am also on a Cape Town Whatsapp Group and what she describe is correct apart from that we say WM or CF etc which is not suppose to be code but clear to help indentify the individuals. I would love to live in a neighbourhood that this does not happen but before that can happen I need to live in a neighbourhood where crime is much lower and the SAPS does what is expected from him.

WhatsApp watch groups drive fear

Trust in state institutions to protect citizens is a prerequisite for sharing social spaces. This trust is corrupted in South Africa, where there are persistent anxieties that crime and violence are out of control. [The Conversation]
Oh dear...someone's feelings got hurt again.

Feelings > Facts as usual.

Also so many obvious anecdotal lies in that article.....laughable.

I don't tolerate that "suspicious guy walking down the street, looking into yards" bs on my groups. If one were to look at footage the guy is not going to walls and looking over them, and if you have a palisade or similar fence you are inviting people to see into your yard.

Also no "guy is taking pictures". Either it's the meter reader or just a guy sitting and doing whatever on his phone. None of these "guy is taking pictures" people have been able to tell me how they know this is happening without seeing the guys screen or hearing a shutter sound or seeing a flash.

And I don't want to hear about the skedonk cars. The crowbar gangs normally drive SUVs or performance German sedans and the drug deals take place with average middle class cars. The skedonk cars will just be interested in stealing your gate motor probably, but you can get a R700 bracket to prevent that if that is your worry.

I have 2 of the groups for my area, one for security and the other for general communications. I don't participate but stay a member just in case there is something of actual importance shared (very rarely).

These groups have given me all I need to have an immense dislike for my neighbors and validation for why I don't take part in the "community days" or clean up projects.

From a dictatorial admin who kicks people from the groups as she pleases to the same 4 or 5 people reporting even doves eyeballing them as suspicious. The dumb feks who refuse to look at the pinned loadshedding message (which is up to date and accurate) and ask if everyone's power is out whenever their lights go off to service delivery complainers who bitch all day but never report their issues and get reference numbers.

Seriously, we were all informed about a new electrical cable being installed and the planned outage to connect it to the sub station. We don't need 6 people asking why the power is out directly after the message! And no number 6, twat street, the guy outside your house with the tripod isn't making a fekking video of your place to rob you! It's a fekking land surveyor checking that the cable guys are doing their job correctly!!!

WhatsApp grpups are a pain in the Butt, but a necessary evil.
And yes... she is correct... the comments of "There is a Bravo guy walking down Moepel Street looking at the houses" is all too common.
It's racism in all it's naked glory...
Usually... the guy is a recycler, or a job seeker... or just the council meter reader.
