WhatsApp watch groups drive fear

WhatsApp grpups are a pain in the Butt, but a necessary evil.
And yes... she is correct... the comments of "There is a Bravo guy walking down Moepel Street looking at the houses" is all too common.
It's racism in all it's naked glory...
Usually... the guy is a recycler, or a job seeker... or just the council meter reader.
Racism could most definitely be at play, especially when the stranger strolling in the area is of a certain hue.

I am also on a Cape Town Whatsapp Group and what she describe is correct apart from that we say WM or CF etc which is not suppose to be code but clear to help indentify the individuals. I would love to live in a neighbourhood that this does not happen but before that can happen I need to live in a neighbourhood where crime is much lower and the SAPS does what is expected from him.

Exactly. Our Telegram group was started by ADT and all the other security companies and SAPS have their presence there. At the community watch meetings we are told to report the presence of unknown loiterers. The idea is that a security vehicle can make their presence known in order to act as a deterent for criminals.

Yes, WM, WF are also frequently mentioned. This is PE, there are a lot of white beggars in Newton Park who vandalise businesses in the area.

Strategies developed by the neighbourhood watch group in Observatory to feel more in charge in what they felt was an out-of-control crime situation also meant maintaining a firm distinction between oneself and ‘the other’. Consequently, monitoring the suburb had a deep impact on what kinds of relationships became possible and whose humanity (namely the residents’) was prioritised over the needs of others (the declared suspects).

Her sole contribution to solving the problem. This is PhD level.

Crime and violence is out of control....
Call it as you see it...
Yeah and in some areas every non whiskey is a apparently a criminal and should be watched like a hawk. One of the reasons I removed my self from the group. Its poison. That said, whatsapp groups aside, I appreciate what CPF and Neighbourhood is doing in the bigger scheme, without them the Zuma Criminals would have destroyed our town.

Kak. Even the Bravo SAPS and SANDF members use the NATO phonetic alphabet, and emergency rescue services, and all servicemen and police internationally.

If you allow (unwittingly) a paranoid person into your WhatsApp neighbourhood group, it will go downhill rapidly

We had such a person. She lives on the 3rd floor of a flat where she can see the subway under the railway line in Wynberg, Cape Town

She took photos of every person coming through this subway from the moment it got light at 05h45 until 19h30. The next day we received 108 pictures, asking if we had seen any of these people acting suspiciously

I went along to that subway the following day and when I got out her end, waved in her direction. Sure enough, I was included in the following days collection (now 122 pics) and to make sure, I wore a red tee-shirt

Two weeks of this and the group shrank from 205 people to 14. There are now 6

People like that should just be dropped from the group.

I would have warned, then kicked for 24 hours if behaviour continues, then perma remove if it still continues. I now have a group that grew so much it had to be split in 4 groups over the 4 years under me (due to WA group size limit).

Serious offences are obviously straight perma remove.

Groups need strong admins that realise you cannot please everyone and keep the group functioning, some people are just toxic to groups.

Had to silence both groups I'm on, still keep it to know what's happening but gosh, the nosy, paranoid, night owl aunty, posting "beware, black man walking down xxx street" at 2am, the street in question is across the park, outside our closure, from her property, on the same street as mine, the park is at least 50 meters wide, i am so sure she is using binoculars, same aunty, when power goes out, starts conversation around how her half boiled kettle can't make her milo and it doesn't dissolve and it's stuck on the mug.... OMG!!!

Interesting that the "common" identities mentioned though, should be extended also to see if there is any accuracy in this compared to the actual arrests for housebreaking and theft, rape, etc. Unfortunately, there is a connection. We'd been finding in our area that many people ringing the bells, sitting on the pavement watching a house, have indeed been the same people seen on CCTV breaking into cars, breaking into houses, robbing people of cellphones, and trying to steal cables. The modus operandi is often to case the joint and see if people are at home. That is not to say every person walking down the road, or ringing a doorbell, is a prospective thief. But the common denominator so far has worked the other way - those been arrested seem to have rung doorbells, been sitting and watching, or looking into yards.

So yes, communities are keeping a close eye now on whoever is walking around. That way quite a few crimes have been averted, and also quite a few arrests shave been made before perpetrators have been able to leave the suburb. The number of robberies of domestic workers walking to the station has been shocking, as have the rapes on open fields. Many communities are saying now they have to be more active to try prevent this, and these crimes are not just perpetrated against home owners, but also against workers walking through the suburb to catch a train.

Sadly with loadshedding we had 5 incidents in the space of 2 days, 3 during the load shedding period. However, they do call out every race if suspicious, Whiskey, Bravo , Indigo, if its out of place, an alert goes out. And , by sheer population density its going to be majority Bravo calls.

That being said, we are a very mixed race hood, same as during the riots, stick together, work together and protect our families.

I never said there was anything wrong with the descriptor.

The racism comes in applying it to the innocent individual in the suburb.

So calm your CPF manboobs...

So in future, we would be what ? Asked to say a male or female because apparently colour is offensive, oh wait you cant do that either because now people dont identify as male or female so thats out, are we allowed to call them humans? Oh wait thats also out because some people identify as animals or appliances.
So fking sick and tired of this woke rubbish !!!!
Maybe all thse arm chair critic should get off their fat asses and actually go serve and see why its so important o identify potential suspects, if it hurts your feelings maybe you are the problem

She was dropped and kicked up a stink
"Were we excluding her because she is a coloured woman?"
"She has given up her valuable time to keep people safe"
"Did we know she is the first line of defence"
So she was put back
The group I see has 4 members now. Her, her husband and daughter and one other person (who we think is dead anyway)

This is the type of shīt I get in my neighbourhood group

Then you are on the wrong groups, on all our groups we dont tolerate chit chat, its for serious incidents, especially our CIT group, medical emergency groups, yes its our industry but still, you want to chit chat start a chit chat group. Emergencies and crime related incidents only and we have generals on our groups from SAPS and the army
