Hi all,

I wanted to ask, how does whatsapp work with dual sim phones,
I have 1 sim with MTN but out of airtime, but I have a FNB sim and recently they announce that whatsapp will be free.

Im confused now, what shows up on other peoples whatsapp? my MTN number or my FNB number?

anybody know how it looks with dual sim phones?

You enter a number in Whatsapp when you install it, so obviously it should show the number your enter.

No, just go onto Wifi and your whatsapp still uses your cellphone number.

Its a webservice, not a cell service, so the sim is irrelevant, as long as there is internet access available on the device.

Whichever number you entered initially is the account it uses - it verifies it only once. Where the data comes from is irrelevant.

Otherwise you wouldn't even be able to use Whatsapp on Wifi.

really? so even if I use a different SIM with a different number, as long as its got signal it will still show my MTN number?

okay, now for a kicker, can I voice call with whatsapp this way? using the FNB network?

if so thats awesome!

As long as you have data from any sim or any WiFi, and it has been activated with the original number, Whatsapp will be fully functional.

Whatsapp is only number dependent for registration. It works quite happily on Wifi for example. So with that in mind, if your MTN number is the one you registered it with, it will stick to that number, regardless of the data connection.

So with me, my Whatsapp number which was registered with CellC, works fine on Afrihost/MTN.

If you want your whatsapp to work with FNB's network, just set your phone to use the FNB sim for data.

thats how I set it right now, but according to everybody here it still shows my MTN number.
I just want to make sure that when I chat to people, they see my correct number not my other number.
as they might not have that samed on their phonebooks or might not know who I am...

what does it actually do? does it now show 2 numbers? or just one like I on wifi?

The sim is used for a data connection. WiFi is used for data connection.

Still, the number you entered when installing Whatsapp. Sounds like that was your MTN number.

The main reason why you use your cellphone to register on Watsapp is that it makes it much easier to link to existing contacts to find people. If you start using usernames, you wont be able to tie into contacts etc.

There is no relation to the SIM card being used.

No.

If you want whatsapp to show your FNB number, either register a new whatsapp instance with that number or use whatsapp to swap the number.

Whatsapp will show the number you registered with regardless of how the device connects to the internet.

My two oldest kids use handsets with no sim card in at all to access whatsapp over the wifi at home.
