Those who use it a lot and for extended periods during the day, do you find it hammers your battery?

Nope, not at all. But if you're using the voice call option a lot I can see it draining your battery.

According to many, true caller drains battery quite fast.

It does drain the battery, but not directly its the screen on time of whatsapping the whole time that is the biggest culprit.

Why mention Truecaller?

Because perhaps it is the culprit here and not WhatsApp?

I uninstalled Truecaller despite liking it quite a lot, because the battery drain was insane.

Power saving + reduced screen brightness + 2G = best battery.
I had many WA voice calls on Edge without any problems. But I don't take voice calls anymore (although I have enough data and faster connection now).

Any app that is constantly connecting to the internet or displaying media (video) content drains the battery. Then there is wifi, bt and, if the signal quality is carp, your cell connection. I've had a battery drain in a few hours just because the cell tower was down. Constantly trying to get signal.

On my phone the last 24 hours:
WhatsApp
Mobile radio active 20m29s
71mAh
3.5mAh per minute

Telegram
Mobile radio active 26m52s
93mAh
3.5mAh per minute

That is just text chatting, no downloads at all. Unusually high WA usage for me though.

The screen used 6.9mAh per minute as a comparison.

Just better and more secure, never said you can use it without a screen

So why quote a post that is talking about screen on time?

The real reason Telegram doesn't use much power is because there are only about 10 people using it so you don't need to open it all that often to message your one other contact who has it installed, everyone else is on whatsapp :whistling:.

It also seems to have an issue with using voice calling...

ok so when I still had whatsapp, I did not notice it increased battery usage.

then I uninstalled it. I was never using it anyway, everyone I actually talk to used Telegram.
then I got an additional hour of battery life out of my phone.

and there is a way to use telegram without using your screen. use telegram desktop.
if you want, you can even turn off your phone while using telegram desktop as there is no constant connection between the phone and the desktop.

sure you can use whatsapp webb, but your phone will constantly be connecting and using data, thus draining battery.

as far as what is better. its pretty simple. there are some of us that lead the way, and move to Android/iOs while the other plebs use blackberries.
there are some people who used whatsapp while everyone used BBM.

now a few years later, the early adopters have moved away from whatsapp. #justsaying.

BBM failed because they refused to make it compatible on any other OS than BlackBerry. Had they done that from the start, I'm sure that would be the IM of choice.
