940Mbps?! Off of a spliced line?!
Spliced means joined. You can do Tbps off of a spliced line.

If you mean spliced as in point to multi point or some type of PON, then it is easily doable on GPON, XGSPON etc.

In fact the "lower" data rates we get are all artificially set. The technology is capable of much more. Yet even the 100/100 currently perceived as the max in SA is almost unachievable because of poor installation and splicing practices.

Erm, what? 100/100 max is mostly due to there being no point going higher/increased costs. OpenServe is offering 200/100, Frogfoot is offering 1Gbps (though I have heard of a mess up in planning in Constantia with a section that had no fiber due to poor planning, nothing wrong with the splicing though) and so do most other providers.

Going higher for residential makes no sense for 99.99% of people, business wise I am sure some have 1Gbps lines or faster.

You have just proved my point. The "limits" are set by business plans, market perceptions and anything but technology. Then we get to areas where the planning gets screwed up, and areas where the deployment is so bad that not even the basic tests are achievable with losses in excess of 9 dB between end points and the GPON node!

1 Gbps line rates are or should be almost automatic! Hence no one should be surprised by the 940 Mbps claimed in this article.

Gigabit fibre is available, but at a very high price for consumers. Speeds are artificially limited because it allows ISPs to charge premiums for higher speeds, without incurring any extra costs for them.
