When to start worrying about not paying your TV licence

This article is getting itself confused between the debt owed and the "crime" of not paying the debt.

According to the Broadcasting Act, the maximum penalty a court could impose on a person found guilty of failing to comply with TV licence laws is a R500 fine or up to six months in prison.

The legal costs associated with pursuing that person would run into several thousands of rand.

The debt collectors will pursue you for the amount owed in a civil court, with a view to obtaining judgment for the amount owed.

Non payment in terms of the Broadcasting Act is a criminal offence, in terms of which a criminal court can sentence you to a R500 fine or 6 months imprisonment.

So it is not correct and/or misleading to state that they will get debt collectors to pursue you to only net a R500 fine.

I've also never ever heard of someone being convicted for failing to pay a TV licence.

The most I can go is 30 days after its due.

By day 45 I have lawyers in Durban phoning or emailing me telling me I will be taken to court and/or receive a judgement on my credit-rating if I don't pay.

There is no debt. There is no agreement. They first need to prove that you own a device that is characterized under the Act that compels you to pay a license. They can do none of this. There is no criminal or civil recourse. They know it, so they are fooling people.

Just do not admit anything to debt collectors calling you. In fact, block all debt collectors.

P****. Be resolute and tell them to jump in front of a taxi The phone calls/SMSs drop significantly after they realise you're not going to pay. As a bonus, block any SMS containing the worlds "TV" automatically. It's been a game changer for me

Or just pay the R265, then they leave you alone for a whole year. I consider that pretty good value for money.

I don't. I see it as pissing money in the wind. I'd rather get a pizza and a beer with my partner and not fund the ANC propoganda machine
Yeah but wouldn't you feel guilty that you're a freeloader while you watch the latest episode of 7de Laan?
