Where are South Africa’s banking apps?

Until ABSA does something about their sky high banking costs, they can forget about attracting new clients to their apps.

I expect Standard Bank to release an app when some other technology comes along and replaces the Internet...

At which time Nedbank will circulate an internal memo looking for comments on the possibility of developing an app...

I am a Standard Bank customer, and I am very surprised that to this day they havent released an IPhone or Android banking app. Their forex, internet banking and share trading is excellent, they have just been mum on the mobile development.

I really hope there is one in the works, FNB is making Standard Bank look like an outdated dinosaur with all their great innovations and applications.

I don't understand why people still bank with ABSA. They are the biggest rip-off bank in South Africa.

Banks should just expose 3rd party API's that others can then tie into. Just look at the various financial apps in the US that allow you to connect to multiple accounts and manage your finances.

I know there's this other thingie that opened up the other day, but it's severely limited, and doesn't seem sanctioned by the banks really due to security concerns. So why aren't the banks making it easier and more secure for 3rd party app builders to tie in?

They gave me the best interest rate. 1 point lower than FNB. I've been battling to get FNB to even consider a transfer at the same rate & I'm not prepared to pay a few hundred rands more a month just to have everything under the same roof.

That's why I'm with ABSA (for my homeloan at least, banking with the is awful, or so I've heard)

Three main reasons.

1) They are dinosaurs unable to keep up with the consumer.
2) They are a cartel. They know people dont have much choice so the lack of competition makes them feel like they dont need to really go out there and "get your vote".
3) They really dont care about you.

I remember when Standard Bank used to be the leading bank in terms of technology and being on the "cutting edge" compared to the rest of the banks. It was one of the reasons I liked them so much...

Not anymore. They slow and suck balls.

They all suck balls.

I pay around R40/month for all my banking costs at ABSA. They're actually damn cheap if you know how to use their systems.

You shouldn't have to zig-zag your way around to try and cut costs. Does that R40/month include internet banking?

Developed my own iOS Nedbank app. Its just a basic view of all your accounts and transactions. I could easily add payments if I found some free time. Not sure what the legalities are of putting it up on the App Store?
