Hi,

I want to setup a Wi-Fi network at my house that has a speed of 300Mbps. I want to:

- Send Files from and to my computers and laptops wirelessly and fast.

Which modem can I buy and which brand must I get?

I have a 384Kbps ADSL at the moment. Should I upgrade that too?

I would think upgrade to a 1meg line. It's not that more expensive.

Do your other computers have Wireless N cards?

I'd suggest using a wired connection for moving large amounts of data. Wireless isn't particularly fast or stable even if you can get the Wireless N to work.

Just buy a Linksys E2000. Costs about R800 online, supports gigabit ethernet and wireless n - ie 300MBPS.

You need to be more specific in what you want to copy from and to. If you want to have your computer and your laptop at home, and share data between them, get a router like the one I mentioned. It also has gigabit ethernet ports, so for real speed, you can connect the two to the router using CAT5 cables.

If you want to copy between your home and somewhere else, say work, you need to upgrade your line from 384k to something faster. If not, upgrade it if you feel like it. You dont need to upgrade your ADSL modem to do that.

As for wifi modems/ routers, you have two options:

1. Keep your existing ADSL modem and buy a new wireless router without a built in ADSL modem. You would connect the new wireless router via its WAN port to the ADSL modem. I'd recommend this.
2. Buy a new wireless router with a built in ADSL modem. This would replace your old one. I wouldnt recommend this simply because you already have an ADSL modem. And you can only use one at a time - what will you do with the old one?

You could also think about adding a good standalone Wifi Router to your current modem or even an USB wifi router.

Think about getting an wifi router or modems with the "n" designation. i.o.w specs showing 802.11b/g/N.
This protocol provide the lowest latency for browsing and gaming.

Another factor is the antenna strenght. Lower versus High gain antennas.

After setting up your wireless network then encrypt it with either WPA or WPA(2) [WPA2 the newest] which is currently the strongest encryption. Also choose a password longer than 14 mixed characters.
This is usually part of setup process steps.
