The cable won't magically up the voltage, so there must be more to it than what is in the picture.

Ok so how do you expect to get 12v out the other end? You would need a step up transformer at least.

Even if you where to step it up, your 900mA is going to drop.

yup thats just a standard DC jack, it wont up your voltage without a mega loss in amps
if USB outputs for example 5 volts at 2.1amps to 12volts your amps will be around 1 amp

But 12v psu's are so cheap. Why would you need to step up usb? I just keep all my old psu's and I have quite a few.

Connect it directly to a car battery.
This is probably your answer. Get a 12v7a (an alarm or gate motor battery) , go to any electronics or security store and get a 12v pigtail. Connect the red wire to the + and the black wire to the - and voila you have a 12v backup. Add a 12v charger and you can connect it inline and forget about it.

7A would be plenty for a router or two.
