Hi there

MyBroadband has partnered with Gumtree to get some feedback from you about your preferences when buying a car.

--Do you prefer to buy your cars from private sellers or professional dealerships?

It will be great if you can give your views in this thread.

Professional dealerships. Then I have someone to take to court/return the car to if necessary...

If the vehicle has a full service\maintenance history, definitely private.
If not, i guess a dealership would be best.

Preference is private, though it depends on what deals are available at the time, the type of vehicle and its age.

My preferred car salesman ( Not connected or anything, but he's an awesome guy from a BMW dealership ) actually drives the cars out to you for test drives. I live like 50KM from his dealership.

Service like that can't be argued with. And so long as he will sell me a car, I will happily deal with him, even if it costs me a little more in the end.

Granted, I've only bought two cars from him, which is not much money for him, but I must assume that if he deals with enough people that become loyal, the extra effort is well worth it

I've had more problems with cars bought from dealerships than the ones obtained through private sale. As long as you do a thorough inspection and ensure that the owner accepts liability for any such defects prior to purchase, you should be fine in my experience.

I have only ever bought cars from dealerships but sold plenty privately. Actually sold a car on Gumtree 2 weeks ago. Posted the ad and the cash was in my hand in less than an hour, was extremely impressed

Both are never 100% truthful and all the standard checks(police, insurance, unitrans, service history, roadworthy,...) should be done regardless of where or who you buy from.
Most of the time private will get you a better price.

I've been burned when buying privately. I've also been burned when buying second hand through a dealer. But the upside with a dealer, is that if they give you the finger, you can go higher :D

Depends on the vehicle and the cost..

+R200k - Dealership without a doubt
-R100k - Private only

In between those 2 figures it would depend on the type of vehicle I am buying etc etc...

Dealership (also, if the car has a maintenance plan and you sell the car, the plan is only transferred if done through a dealership; it's a sneaky little clause).

Have only ever bought cars through dealerships and this would be my preference for future buys too.

Which cars are you talking about?

I bought a Merc privately a few years ago, and it still had maintenance plan on it, and it was honoured by Merc without even a question.

Dealership. Better legal recourse, easier to finance and less admin to deal with...
