Was just wondering what have you spent most of your cash on when it comes to cars? Obviously we are not talking petrol, tyres and brakes.

For me personally its been ball joints and suspension related work, not due to my driving lol :D
Other than that (touch wood) I have had no snapped cambelts or major breakdowns resulting in major moola to repair.

I blew the head gasket on my old tazz . The fan on the radiator was broken so the engine got a tad hot.
Was about 3k to fix ,but the car never worked probably again. Keep on using like 1t of oil every 2 weeks. Keep in mind it still drives fine ,just heavy on oil.
Gave the car to my sister so not my worry anymore :p

So far I have only had one car long enough to encounter big money repairs. After about 200,000km I had to do the head gasket on my old Astra. Other big expenses on that car was two CV joints and three cambelt services.

Gearbox diff on my Alfa went about 4 years ago. Took the clutch with it. Cost about R33k for a new gearbox and clutch.

Just completed CVT overhaul on my Audi A4, around R42k (after an additional R12k repairs from the same issue over the last 3 years).

Don't know why you exclude brakes as they are a pretty costly item when you do discs and pads all together...more than a cambelt job in fact.

But beyond brakes I would say cambelts, clutches and suspension components.

However the single most expensive item based on size that I have ever purchased was the PCV Valve replacement for my GTI. It was something like R850 but when I actually saw the thing and how small it was and essentially just a piece of plastic I was rather miffed about the whole thing, especially considering it was just a noise and not a "real" problem.

Merc C240 2001:
R18k because some dolt changed a tyre using the normal bolts not the spare wheel bolts and ran them past the thread and through the disk.
R8k for a new window motor.
R14k for the radiator fan as it is a complete unit integrated with the radiator and Merc just replaces the whole thing.
R4k every few years for new disks.
R2-3k Spark plugs on a V6 with official merc labour!
R4.5k new ignition just to get a new spare key as the spare key was missing and they can't copy old ones.

Jeep Commander:
R15k for new CV joints all round.
R4k every few years for new disks.
R8k on upgraded ECU.
R12k some issue with an exhaust manifold leak.

Rough prices from memory.
