Recently I restarted my PC unexpectadly, it froze. After that there was no sound. It makes that funny sound emanated from the CPU. I have a Realtek sound card. I downloaded the 1 driver from realtak.com.tw, never worked, gave a code 10 error, downloaded a 2nd one. Same scenario too. I went to softpedia.com and downloaded an .exe Realtek driver there. It didn't wanna install, so I removed SP3. Installed it. When I finished installing this, I restarted hoping everything would go back to normal. After like 20 seconds after logon, I'm by encountered a BSOD, talking about portcls.sys. Every time I get this screen. Even on Domain Controllers & Safe Mode it gives the BSOD. What's the solution now? I'm not that expirienced when it comes to hardware.

Try start the machine using last known good configuration (it will use the previous registry settings). Then download the drivers from the manufacturers website, uninstall the old drivers, install the new and reboot. Should fix it.

When lets say there would be an error the error sound would play. Now the CPU notifies errors. Also Avira when detecting a virus the sound is heard.

your CPU makes a sound??

The OP may be confusing something else with the CPU I think.

From the post I think he means that sound has stopped working on the system. By the funny sound from the CPU I think they mean the PC speaker is going off maybe?

The best bet may be to get the PC to someone that knows what they are doing.

^^^ lol

Install your xp disc and do a system repair. If that fails you'll probably have to recover what you can and reinstall windows. that is if the hardware is still good.

If the CPU is making a noise, it may be the heatsink fan - probably clogged up with dust and overheating?

If you go into the BIOS (normally the DEL key when booting) and check the CPU temps - what are they?

I really don't think that sound is coming from the CPU. On reading closely I think it's the soundcard - try taking it out and see what happens. Although if you have messed up the driver installation it's going to be quite tricky to fix.

I can't use the PC at all, cause after like 20 seconds the BSOD appears. I'll try and take out the sound card.

memory ...use memtest - try only 1 stick at a time if possible - also try another power supply..

also make sure your cpu doesn't overheat...

I googled PORTCLS.SYS and it looks like a sound driver issue.

Khanya I would say you very well may need to re-install Windows.

If you can figure your way around it go into your BIOS setup (usually by tapping the delete key from when your system turns on), and disable the sound totally. Then start windows and if it does start that may just affirm that it's the sound card. You could then try to remove the driver, restart, re-enable your sound card and see if it gets you into Windows.

Then you can try re-installing your sound driver.

Otherwise I think you probably just need to reinstall as I said, so you need to backup any important data and then do the reinstall.

Hey I'm not a techie. What's memtest? The error talks about portcls.sys. What causes it is that I was installing a Realtek driver. So I needed to reboot after installation. After, the hardware wizard at the bottom right appears, so it attempts to complete installation everytime, it boots, I think there's now there's a conflict between the the driver and hardware. As I've said, I've tried safe mode and all booting options. I'm given about 20 secs after start-up. Disabling sound in the BIOS and loading fail-safe defaults hasn't assisted either. I have a Winxp disc, re-installing is my last resort, I can't afford to lose 50GB music and 200GB movies, series and other vital stuff . I don't want to take my PC at this nearby shop, where they're gonna re-install my PC without my consent, as they've done twice!
Help please! I'm so desperate.

OK say let me opt for a repair install. Am I not going to lose any data? I've heard that there are chances in which you may. Which I can't afford.
