Same reason that logic would be silly if you were talking about phones. China produces a huge range of stuff in all degrees of quality.

I’ve never really got that argument about people complaining about the quality of “Made in China”.

The factories are literally geared up to manufacture different qualities - A-grade, B-grade, etc. and the buyers/retailers here choose which quality they want.

Why do people shop at Pep/China Mall and expect a C-grade product that costs R80 to last more than a year? It may look similar but most certainly isn’t the same quality as something from PnP (B-Grade) or Woolies (A-grade).

People need to realise that you get what you pay for. 80% of all our products (including our household appliances and electronics) are all made in China and those are fine.

In South Africa especially, we all want the BEST for next to nothing.
The retailers import some real cr@p in the way of Chinese junk and often, the consumer wouldn't know a good product from a bad one if it got up and bit him on the butt.

Lets take Woolies as an example.
Their clothing .....
Woolies used to have a big QC lab, technologists, M&S standards - USED to.
Today, the quality of much of their stuff is no better than anyone else.
Chinos - the cloth for their chinos comes from China, it may come from a number of mills. The same mills that make cloth for Mr. Price or Pep. They all shop at the Canton fair.
Is Woolies clothing any better? Not really.

School greys - either comes from the single weaver left in SA or China - no matter whether you get them from Woolies or Pep.

Bedding and pilling - common in SA.
150 - 180 count percale is usually all imported, and quite tough to find.
SA used to send percale to the UK, ours was so good.
No more :(

Unfortunately, quality isnt what it used to be, and price is no longer an indicator of quality.

So just get the Pep option. It's only socks, not like you're gonna use it to clothe your junk.

Try the outdoor shops in addition to above. You can get some nice hiking/ski sock from them.

Longjohns. I don't really like it though because it's tight on the crotch.

You don't understand

In deep winter here I wear two pairs of socks, longjohns and frock, two pairs of sweatpants, two tops, pants, multiple sweaters and or jackets.

I don't do well at 0 degree temps..... and all the socks at the shops here are too damn thin.

Those heat holders are looking interesting I just wish dischem stocked the long variety as well.

Try and find some Falke socks. It's very good quality and warm.

Yup, I had a client who used to manufacture seamless clothing. He sold it at the same price to Mr P, Woolies etc.
The only difference was the retail price once the logos were applied, same items cost more than double at Woolies.

Im fairly sure its a common theme with most clothing items.

a few years ago I had several tops and jeans made by a CMT

as long as I don't get fat I think I won't have to buy clothing ever again
