For what it's worth, I got the Redmi 4 Prime from gearbest, paid R3000 all-in (incl shipping via DHL, delivered to Cape Town CBD within 6 days from placing order). Great little phone! I was coming from an LG G3 that started bootlooping, with a Sony Xperia Z3 loaner to tide me over. This phone feels as good, if not better, than the G3.
It should be mentioned that many of these Chinese sites, including gearbest, ship the phone with a vendor ROM which is ****ty and it's a bit of a pain in the ass to replace. I managed to get bootloader unlock permissions from Xiaomi via their site within about 3 days, after which I was able to flash the xiaomi.eu ROM which is much better for our (South African) purposes.
Overall, I've had a pretty positive experience ordering this phone and using it so far. And +-R3000 for what feels like something that should cost between R8000 and R10k. I'm sure the other Xiaomi models are awesome too.
I wouldn't recommend this route if you're not comfortable flashing ROMs and whatnot. I should also mention the r/xiaomi subreddit on reddit is very helpful and has a wiki explaining much of the technicalities surrounding the different ROMs, flashing, unlocking, etc. The mods are also available to help you on their Discord server.
Just thought I'd share my experience, maybe this will help someone who's on the fence or who might be struggling
