Any good suggestions on the versions? I know the Mi series is better than the Redmi
Go for a Redmi Note. It's well specced and priced.

Mi is overpriced for a Chinese brand.

That way you can also get the MiMax when it comes out.

All the "service providers" should read these comments and see what we actually want on contracts, not the one or two phones they allow us to have.

I managed to pick up a redmi note 2 on a VC contract for R149 a month. If you look at places like IC, HI fi Corp and Dion wired

I won't entertain delivery, even at your cost
I'm not the nicest seller you'll ever meet - don't dare ask me a valid sales question

Anyone know where I can get a Mi Max? Been stalking the usual places like MIA, Takealot, Makro, Dion, Game and Incredible Connection - all out of stock or not listed at all.

Please don't be like that other guy on this forum and confuse it with a Mi Mix. I'm not looking for that concept phone but the 6.44" one. :)

For what it's worth, I got the Redmi 4 Prime from gearbest, paid R3000 all-in (incl shipping via DHL, delivered to Cape Town CBD within 6 days from placing order). Great little phone! I was coming from an LG G3 that started bootlooping, with a Sony Xperia Z3 loaner to tide me over. This phone feels as good, if not better, than the G3.

It should be mentioned that many of these Chinese sites, including gearbest, ship the phone with a vendor ROM which is ****ty and it's a bit of a pain in the ass to replace. I managed to get bootloader unlock permissions from Xiaomi via their site within about 3 days, after which I was able to flash the xiaomi.eu ROM which is much better for our (South African) purposes.

Overall, I've had a pretty positive experience ordering this phone and using it so far. And +-R3000 for what feels like something that should cost between R8000 and R10k. I'm sure the other Xiaomi models are awesome too.

I wouldn't recommend this route if you're not comfortable flashing ROMs and whatnot. I should also mention the r/xiaomi subreddit on reddit is very helpful and has a wiki explaining much of the technicalities surrounding the different ROMs, flashing, unlocking, etc. The mods are also available to help you on their Discord server.

Just thought I'd share my experience, maybe this will help someone who's on the fence or who might be struggling

I also bought the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 about 6 weeks ago - 5 days delivery time with DHL.

Flashing ROM's is not necessary. When on gear best, look at the titles of the phones, and select one that says "INTERNATIONAL ROM". Mine cam with the international ROM and no flashing was necessary - everything was in English, with Playstore etc just like it would be if it were bought here.

Yes, lovely phone, solid and seamless

I just ordered a 32GB Note 3 for $167 + $2 shipping insurance. Been having some good luck with SAPO as of late when ordering from Aliexpress so lets see how this one pans out. It's a pity about TNT/DHL - I order a Ara X5 TV Box and it arrived within 1.5 weeks using them.
My 32GB Note 3 (Snapdragon) arrived in mint condition 5 January 2017 (shipped 11 November 2016 from Singapore :erm:), no import/VAT charged by SAPO/SARS. No problems with the device and it worked straight out of the box. I requested from Xiaomi a bootloader unlocking code which I got via SMS 3 days later and the phone is now rooted with all the shytty Google bloatware removed.

The ONLY gripe I am having is finding cases/covers for the device locally. A screen protector was easy but it seems that you cannot find a case that fits this phone anywhere locally - they are all too small.

Anybody have any luck in finding a case/cover for theirs? It seems that the Note 4 covers/cases may fit, going to test one out.
