Went to Spec Savers yesterday for an eye test and new glasses. Total Amount was R 6976 but then there was an additional discount from Discovery & Spec Savers so the total ended up at R 4500. The lenses has some additional filters and the frame is R 900 but this seems extremely expensive. Medical aid does cover the cost but I was wondering if there are any alternatives place I can investigate for next year ?

Use Smart Buy Glasses - I'ved used them a couple times and they've always been brilliant and an isane amount cheaper than the local guys. They cover any customs costs.

Did your medical aid cover the full cost?

St Johns also do specs for low cost. No need to plead poverty, you just make an appointment like any other optometrist.

I am glad to hear, I have been looking at this, but I don't know. I think I must take the leap, how is the quality? I assume you all you need is a prescription. How do they do the optical center on the lenses?

I've done this twice.

Eye test at Torga Optical a little over two weeks ago - R400,00

Two pairs of prescription glasses and a spare frame, ordered on the 29th of December - R1 005,04

Forwarding to SA - R495,58

Postbox-Courier should have them on a flight to SA by the weekend.

R1 900,62

Done.

This was June 2018 and around R800 odd, all-in. There was a similar thread at the time.

New babies...

Love the old frames so it's the new prescription in the same frame;

And the 'for a bit of a change' pair:

The only thing that's been different is a Covid delay with Postbox-Courier.

USPS had the package at their JFK depot on Monday but they're only getting weekend flights out to SA...

The wait doesn't bother me 'tho and it's well worth it IMO.

For anyone else who may be genuinely struggling and not on medical aid, St Johns Ambulance offer a service (at least they do where I live) for an eye test and specs way below the going rates. My dad, who doesn't have medical aid, has used them.

I imagine thats not ideal for multi or bifocals where they have to measure on your face before sending them off to be fitted (lenses)
Get your eyes tested and have those measurements ready to add with your prescription...

I imagine the only difference it would make from my order is the cost of the lenses.
