I want to get freelance app development work. The MyBB IT Jobs Wanted sub forum is too new to work atm.

If you were to spend a few R1,000 advertising where would you do it?

Business Day is R1,050 for 1 day B&W 5 cm x 1 column advert.

Google Adsense and Facebook you can target and you pay per click not impressions. You can set limits.

Bizcommunity is way too expensive, R350 per 1,000 impressions (they have nearly 700,000 page views a month).

Freelancer.com?

I actually get a lot of spare, part time work from there, and the people pay well :D (once you have a good reputation). You only compete for the lowest price point if you have no reputation. When you build a positive reputation, people are happier to pay more. Also, see the work you get there as work, "leads", as you often privately negotiate other work once you have started on the initial project.

Had a look earlier but seemed like you are competing for the lowest rates.

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess one should do some small jobs for cheap to get those initial reputation points?

Yip and build up a name with reliable eu and us partners. Once you do one job via freelancer and they know you exist, you can renegotiate more reasonable rates once there is a working relationship. Consider the freelancer job a sales lead you get paid for.

Invest in a website

As ghoti is saying you need to be able to show what you can do, or build a reputation. When working with US and EU clients you need a website. So my advice would be to first invest in a website, with good content (frikkadel.co.za has the cheapest option) Use that website to advertise on 'free' business listings. Maybe you can show on the website what you can do.
I's either that or be very very cheap in terms of pricing to get that reputation indeed.
