Which ADSL modem? PCI / ethernet

Telkom have finaly installed my ADSL line (very surprised when they phoned this morning), but now I need a modem. As we all know there are 3 types PCI, Ethernet and USB. Currently I have a Linux box with DHCP/NAT using an ISDN PCI, connecting to my WinXP PC, and ADSL PCI modem is what I'm leaning towards since it only costs ~R300. But I also know of a switch(5port) with a modem, which works out to be more than PCI+switch.

I've been searching all over the web for linux drivers for ACEEX PCI Adsl modem (sold by Cyberdyne www.cyberdyne.co.za), but I can't find anything and I'm not buying the modem unless I know it will work with Linux. Anyone know if I need drivers and if so where I could find the drivers?

Any other suggestions or comment on ethernet modems would also be welcome.

Thanks

Roosta,

I'm afraid the PCI modems won't do you much good if you're running Linux. Support for these is rather limited there and that doesn't seem to be changing any time soon.

What I can recommend is getting a D-Link DSL300G ethernet modem. The modem is not a router/NAT, but simply an ethernet bridge ADSL modem. You'll be able to use your Linux box as the NAT and firewall, just as you do now. Just run a PPPoE client on the Linux box, they are widely available.

The DSL-300G will put you back about R750 if you buy it from a good retailer. Simply combine it with a switch and you will have everything you need.

Thank you for your answer, do you know of any retailer or distributer that sell these in JHB?

I know this is not the right section, but I'd just like to continue from this thread.

I've bought a D-Link DSL-504G ADSL Router & Switch, but I can't seem to connect. Before I continue, I had a problem accessing the interface, but luckily found the the ip in the manual is wrong. It should've been http://192.168.0.1 and not http://10.1.1.1

Back to my problem, I've set all the settings to what Telkom has instructed, I'm connecting to the Imaginet and receiving an IP. But I can't open a web site, even though while trying to connect to google, in the status bar it displays 66.x.x.x (google ip), which means its picking up the DNS. Telkom hae tested the line and have found no problem, my modem reports the line connected as 512k up and 2048 down.

Router settings are:

VPI: 8
VCI: 35

Broadband : PPPoE LLC

My ISP have tested my account and it is said to be working properly.

I'm pulling out my hair ... please can someone help.
