I'm looking at getting a big LCD to display images (and the occasional PowerPoint) to groups. TV is not important.

I need to be able to run image slideshows off USB and to connect a PC.

Resolution, colour and contrast are the primary factors that are important to me.

Budget is a consideration, and the list of possibles (all theoretically HD) are...

(Hifi Corp.) byD:sign 40" LCD TV (STY0340)
Mecer 42” Monitor (42T5M)
Proline 42" LCD TV (LCDTV855-42FHD)
Sinotec 42" LCD TV (MP-42HC56)
Benq 42" LCD Tv (SQ4231)

Anyone got any opinions?

Looks at the 42" full hd Plasma or LCD. Anything that does 1920x1080 will be decent enough and they're pretty well priced. Sinotec is generally pretty good if the reviews are anything to go by on this forum.

I did say plama or LCD... I use my plasma as a display screen for surfing the web and it's alright.

By means of an update...

I tested the byD:sign 40" LCD TV (STY0340) at Hifi Corp Woodmead - Images off the USB were over-saturated and the contract was poor - we tried tweaking the display settings, to no avail. I struggled a bit to get my PC connected at 1920x1080 but did succeed. The image quality (as with all the displays I tested was much better) except that the display had a black border left and right of the image - we couldn't make this go away. Scratch this one.

The Sinotec at Game didn't have a USB and the one at Makro was mounted so high, that I passed on these.

I couldn't find Proline, Benq or Mecer displays in a showroom, so these fell by the wayside.

I finally settled on a Samsung 40" (LA40C530) from www.demostock.co.za at R5999, after testing it at Game (who had it for R7499 with free blu-ray player, which was of no value to me). Images viewed off the USB are pretty good both colour and contrast-wise. It's user interface topped the byD:sign by a long way. PC-connected images were really good - nice a crisp and clear, with just a bit of backlight bleed on the dark ones, but I may be able to tweat the settings to minimise this.

What I learned...
1. The lesser know brands are a bit rough "around the edges".
2. The USB display engine on all models, was not up to par with those off a connected PC.
3. There are lots of good deals on LCD's at the moment, so shop around.

Good on you, you went through the correct process and found something that suited your needs. These types of posts should be added to stickies so new users can be pointed to them for advice.

Samsung LA40D550. Game had it for R4999 recently. Contrast and viewing angles are amazing. It's got USB for images and video and LAN with Samsung Allshare for connecting to computer. It will blow you away...

EDIT: Sorry, I see this thread is kinda old and that you did get a 40" Samsung from Game.
