My dad wants to dump dstv and replace it with showmax and/or netflix.

What device would you suggest he use?

Something with a remote that can plug into hdmi would be best...

ChromeCast operated from your cellphone... it's the most convenient

If he insists on having the old classic remote - avoid MyGica. They just don't last.

I'm very happy with my Roku 4. No Showmax on it though, Netflix and tons of other channels.

A fiddly pain for ordinary non-tech users.

Rather look at a streaming device like a Roku or WDTV or equivalent.

WDTV I had back in the day lasted forever so that gets my vote

The myGica is also not "tech noob friendly". Im no Bill Crates or Steve Johns - but its complicated a fek to keep up to date with which apps work and which dont.

Yea the tech noob thing is a big deal, He lives too far away for me to fix it for him constantly. I want a set and forget system.

Was thinking an android box as showmax works on android.

I've got to say I've been well impressed with the mi box. The chromecast has a bit of a learning curve but once there it's awesome and basically never gives hassles

Honestly I've had 4 Chromecasts and they have never given me issues with having to set them up multiple times

I don't think they want to have to work through phones. they just want one device that they can point at with a remote and press a button.

Yeah the. I'd go mi Box. It's really straightforward to use with android tv. I personally haven't bothered with Netflix on it since I have Netflix on my smart tv which is wired.

Showmax is slowly dying so a unit that plays Netflix is better.

Check out the Droid tv thread.
