Which handgun do you recommend for EDC?

Re handgun safes.

Does it need to be SABS approved SANS 953?

Are there any with pin pads available?
For what it’s worth you don’t need to spend a lot of money on one … the cheap option I went with is an Xpanda brick gun safe. It has the necessary accreditation, has enough space for a handgun and bullets, and … job done. They’ve got bigger options too if you need it, but what I was seeing in gun stores at the time was way more expensive.

FYI - OT

I am busy sorting out everything regarding my father that passed away last week. He had 2 x firearms on his name.

Went to the local DFO. Kwaai tannie. She knows me by now, had a lot of dealings with them recently.
Anway I need to remove my dads 30-06 from his safe at his house. He left it for my son who is only turning 8 this year.

She immediately stopped what she was doing, got a tear in her eye and tuned the rest of the okes there to hold tight and she started helping me. She issued me a storage permit for 12 months. Due to the fact that I myself have a 30-06 on my name and that I am competent.

So I may now legally store it at my place, without getting the executor of the estate involved or handing it in at the police.

My dealing with the DFO from here on in will be smooth sailing. Thankfull.

Sincerest condolences to you and your family through this time, at least something that should be common sense at times went very smoothly for you and didn't cause you unnecessary stress.
All the best,

All the best,
Thank you.

There will be an issue however with his pistol. The police took it from the scene and sent it to forensics already.
Will sort that out as it comes.

RIP to your father.

When you say left the firearm to your son, like written in a will?

Well, a while back I got a century-old windbuks from my uncle who got rid of his guns (started to get dementia). And I've slowly gotten into guns and its legislation in SA since then.

Any tips for a rookie regarding guns in SA? Just out of curiosity, what would be the best firearm for concealed carry/self-defence? (I assume either a normal pistol or pump action shotgun according to FCA 2000)

Glock 19. For when you can only buy one gun. ;)

Any other tips?
Have you done your proficiency training for all four types, if not I'll advise you to do it ASAP.

As for a carry gun, it depends on your budget, but yes, you can't go wrong with a Glock 19, there are obviously other great brands with suitable models, however unfortunately, spares and replacement parts are easiest to come by for Glocks.
Training in the sense that you know your FA inside out, i.e. what causes particular malfunctions, how to clear them / correct them, dry fire practice, handling your firearm with utmost confidence and that the rules of safety are imprinted in you. Hence, it is like muscle memory by now.
Reliable hollow points as your carry ammo, carrying condition one (1) "one up".
Participating in club matches, whichever discipline, will teach you something, instead of going to an indoor range and blasting out 50 rounds at a stationary target, whilst you are in a cubicle.

Anyways, there is soooooo much one could say, but good luck, we all were there at some point, and don't listen to braai stories, just use common sense, that will get you very far. :)

Adding;
Do get a proper holster made from kydex or similar.
Do get proper ear & eye protection as your hearing and eyesight can't be replaced, so basically "buy once, cry once" kind of purchase.

PS: If you need any assistance or have questions etc, do not hesitate to reach out, I will try my best to assist where I can regarding any FA's related questions.

Go to a gun shop...look around...feel them...Go to a range and shoot some.
Listen to everyones advice and recommendations and then do some online research.
There are tons of videos online for all the different options.
But the decision is yours at the end of the day.

Im kinda jealous as its definately a fun journey when you start it...

(I opted for Glocks as there are loads of holsters, accessories and spares wherever you look...I just carry for SD)

You can add a new one to your home, then it will be a fun journey all over again :)
Possibilities are endless.

Unfortunately its just too excpensive for me to get into...3 years ago when I bought my Glock, a box of ammo was under R350...
Now its borderline R500...

But I would love to shoot more and buy more!
