Which handgun do you recommend for EDC?

Hi All

Pardon the ignorance, i watched the video below. And admittedly have not been to any gunshops... yet

Do most places carry 2nd hand at reduced prices ? and whats the general consensus on buying 2nd hand?

I'm sure there are a lot of gunshops that carry 2nd hand, most around me carry new but some do facilitate 2nd hand sales also.

Two of my handguns are 2nd hand, including the one I EDC. It had around 300 or 400 rounds put through it but was in good shape. Have since shot a couple thousand rounds through it with no issues.

If it were my first firearm, I might want to go with something new though.

Maybe give a location where you live and the folks here can recommend a place that sells 2nd hand.

2nd had should be fine, maybe take someone knowledgeable with you. In my experience most handguns are almost new and rarely fired.
It's also very hard to wear out a modern handgun. The wear parts can be replaced cheaply and easily. Just a few springs.

But keep in mind, in the greater scheme of things, the price of the gun shouldn't be your main consideration.

Training
Application Fees
Safe
Personal gear (ear/eye protection)
Holster
The elephant in the room: Ammo. Super pricy
And the a ton of random paraphernalia you will somehow acquire.

All these things will add up to more than the gun. especially if you shoot a lot. Ammo costs add up quickly.

If money is a consideration (and it is for most of us) consider safari outdoor 6-pay. You pay it off over 6 months, no interest, while you wait for the license to be approved.

Thanks for this handy info

Will look at places that offer payment plans too...

Serious question, from someone who would like to start the application process.

Do you think the police that has so called "lost" many firearms doesn't also leak information to the whereabouts of everyone that has a gun license? Or am I maybe missing something, I assume they know exactly how many guns every person has and the address of each person.

You are overthinking it. Yes they know all of the above.

But its easier to rob a police station apparently.

Gun owners will just put intruders down if they break in

There is the risk of being targeted when arriving / leaving your home if licensed owners information is passed on /sold.

Doesn't matter. I'd rather take the risk of having the firearms and being on a list that there's a 99% chance of not getting sold, than not having it and being targeted by every day violent criminals.

You could apply the same logic to people driving high risk vehicles.
Just to be clear, civilian losses are but a drop in the bucket compared to SAPS, SANDF, METROPOLITAN POLICE, SECURITY COMPANIES and other state entities.
Just a suggestion, if you do decide to start your proficiency training, do all four (4] unit standards at once.

Probably true. But an unfortunate side effect. I'd rather have the guns.

One-day pistol special at Safari Outdoor on Tuesday: https://safarioutdoor.co.za/pub/media/wysiwyg/pdf/1 DAY ONLY - PISTOL SALE SEPT 2024.pdf

I bought my Glock 19 from them a couple years ago on their interest-free six month loan scheme, which is perfect because it gives one time to complete the license application in the interim.
Just an FYI regarding the 6 month interest free, is that it only applies to standard pricing... unfortunately not on specials
