won't buying a product that's broken (broken sub woofer) have no warrantee??? or if it has a warantee, you can still get the original sub woofer repaired, or exchanged for a working one... :erm:

OK i just spoke to the service manager at Dion Wired. The salesman was trying a fast one with me. He told me it was a demo but it was returned by a customer who have abused it and returned it.

I will however be getting a new Samsung 5.1 HT system from Govin Mani for 4k. Exact same speakers (5 as opposed to 7) including a 10" sub and a normal USB DVD player. I don't need the HD upscaling because I'm still using a old school TV.

After much discussion with my wife last night, she feels we should get the Sony HT-DDW5000 at Game cause "Party mode" would be used often. 3 of the 4 Samsung units we've seen had blown amps on the subwoofer. So the Samsungs are a no-no.

I'm going to Game today to get the Sony. We will put the stand on one of the small wooden coffee tables next to the TV unit. I don't even know if I'm going to use all the speakers initially. Maybe just the 2 tall fronts and 1 sub for now.

BTW how do I get it home? Will it fit into my Corolla?

that's good, so you've made up your mind on the set. :) i also have a corolla :D .... but the box's are quite big, so you'll have to open the box and pack the speakers in the boot, and put the amp, remote, manuals, and all the other smaller stuff on the back seat. that's what i did :p

I opened the biggest box and put the 2 front speakers in the boot and the centre and 3 surrounds on the front seat. The other huge box was squeezed in onto the back seat.

I only set up the 2 front speakers & 1 sub. See pic http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=11797&cat=500

I am moving back to Cape Town in December & will connect it all up properly.

Everything is ok except the DVD only plays black & white. I need to get a set of rca component cables (green, blue, etc). Will this help to get colour?
The DVD is connected to the amp & the amp connected to the TV. Is this correct?

Should I rather connect the DVD directly to the TV? If I do it this way then the amp will stay on TV as the amp will recieve the audio out from the tv.

oh okay. nice :)

picture is better via the 3 component cables. for now you can check the settings on the dvd player... i can't exactly think what it is, but usually there's a setting to switch between standard rca picture out and component video... there is a possibility that yours is set on the component settings and it's not receiving all the colour channels to display the colors correctly via a single rca picture out.... (component video = rgb split channel picture). so check for that...

yes, that's right.... dvd and all other devices to amp, and amp connects to tv, and you switch between all your devices like xbox360, dvd, ps3, dstv decoder, etc on the amp :)

I'm going to get a set or 2 of component RCAs on my way home. The DSTV and Xbox is playing fine connected into the TV & the sound comes via the TV to the amp. Will there be any change if I connect those 2 via the amp? All I can see is the TV will stay on 1 channel (Component) and I can change components via the amp. Is this right?

there's a audible difference with the sound going directly to the amp rather than tv to amp.... and i advise optical's for the xbox and ps3, and coaxial for the dvd player. and connect the amp to the tv via hdmi

I paid R6669.00 for the Sony HT-DDW5000 last thursady. Game has it on special from tomorrow at R6299.00. Can I get the difference back from them? If Makro had the special, Game would give me the difference back, but would Game allow this with their own specials?

yes they will... and when you was purchasing the set, it should have been the salespersons responsibility to tell you that the item was to go on sale the following week. just take your sales receipt and talk to one of their floor managers ;)

If it's the same basic amp as my Sony setup it has 3 HDMI inputs & 1 output. It can 'switch' between any of these outputs without you needing to change the corresponding source on your TV.

Did some googling and apparently a repeater is what people should look for to futureproof themselves for blu ray.
Switcher is the same as pass thru - just passes the signal thru to your tv, whereas a repeater processes the info first so it can accept audio and video.
Switcher and pass thru = audio not collected by receiver nor is video (passed right through to tv via a single cable)
Repeater = audio recieved by receiver
Blu ray can only process high def audio codecs via repeater and will not be accepted with switcher or pass thru.
High quality audio lpcm can also be accepted from blu ray on the 5.1 systems like the HT-DDWG800 which offers more bang for buck than the above model according to various audiophiles on av forums.
