There are over 20 bakkies to choose from in South Africa, each offering different advantages - from reliability to affordability.

We've added the most popular options to the poll, but there are also a bunch of others on the market, including the following:
  • GWM P500
  • GWM Steed
  • Foton Tunland G7
  • JAC T6
  • JAC T8
  • JAC T9
  • LDV T60
  • Maxus T90 EV
  • Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster
  • Peugeot Landtrek
  • Jeep Gladiator
  • Mahindra Bolero
Other options, like the Mazda BT-50 and Nissan NP200, were discontinued in 2024, while a few new launches are on the cards for 2025, such as the Kia Tasman.

Which do you think is the best bakkie in South Africa?

Best ito longevity will always be a Hilux.

It does come with a number of concessions though esp in Jozi-land.

Second spot for the KB/D-Max.

Shout out to the heavily underrated Navara & Triton.

Toyota is not as good as it use to be, Ford was never good and Nisan is good but doesn't last nearly as long. When it comes to transport the Suzuki Super carry is a beast with nothing getting close to it. If you want stronger engine and maybe want a few more comforts look at Isuzu. Isuzu is a monster and they last. It is tuff reliable and will probably outlast the speedometer and all displays they put in the new bakkies. It cost more then most but is well worth it if you can afford it.

Afriforum would like their thread back.

Objectively it’s the Hilux on paper.

But in SA… Isuzu D-Max is my top pick on that list.

Bang for buck I like the GWM P-500 or even the P-500 PHEV. I like the look of the JAC T9. If you got the $$$ Toyota all the way.

Toyota Bakkies is the most stolen/Hijacked vehicle in SA for a good reason,

all the others COPY the hell out of it, the Chinese just make a really weird version version
but people buy it, because, its cheap and got more features than a Toyota.

but my question has always been, especially for those that never drive their Bakkies off road,
or use the load bin,or do anything that actually NEEDS a Bakkie,

why put up with all the negatives? fuel consumption, size, weight ect,
just to sit in the same traffic as a s-presso or a Bajaj qute
