Another vote for Samsung Evo. I have three of them, 840, 850 and an 850 Msata. Their software is good and they're just solid drives in general.

What issues?

They typically come with a 5 year warranty, so at least you can get it replaced.
It disappears in Windows and than when it does pop up it slows the system down. Bought it from Takealot don't think they'll cover the 5 year warranty, unless I go though WD themselves.
I would've thought the older 256 would give me more problems :)

So it's not your main system drive?

You could try this - this has helped my when drives don't show in Windows, or give the "This drive needs to be formatted before use" error;
  • At the Start button, click Run.
  • Type “cmd” into the blank and hit Enter key.
  • Type “chkdsk n:/f” (replace n with the true drive letter of the problematic partition) into the Command Prompt window and then press the Enter button.
  • It will start repairing damaged files and you will see some of your filenames before it finally asks if you want to save lost chains into another location. Click "Yes" just in case.

If you can't find the drive letter, you might need to find it in the 'Storage' settings under 'Computer Management' in the Control Panel.

I once had a memory module fail (totally dead) that I had purchased from tal, after about 3 years. I think that the total warranty was 5 years. Opened a ticket with them. They picked it up with their courier and sent it to the supplier. 3 weeks later they delivered a new stock. No problem whatsoever with takealot and returns under warranty.

Phone drive control corporation and ask the to check the serial number to see if it's one of theirs.

Windows 10 bug?

No. Drive errors have been around since the advent of DOS and are usually casued by a corrupt master file table (MFT) or bad file system descriptors that cause an OS not to read the drive correctly. CHKDSK is really good at fixing these issues.

I know, yes, but you can't rule out Windows 10 these days. That command works most of the time for me as well. I've had weird hard drive issues with Windows 10 this year and at first I thought it was the drive but a reinstallation proved me wrong.

Windows 10 runs on the NTFS file system which has remained pretty much unchanged since XP.

I have 3 machines at home. 1 x Win 10 PC and 2 x MacBook Pro's. If the corrupt drive doesn't read on Windows (be it ExFAT or NTFS, it won't read on my Macs - and yes, I have Paragon NTFS installed on my Macs.)

I'm not saying that Windows 10 can't be the problem, but the likelihood of it being the cause vs a typical file system error is pretty remote, as it's a file system error, and not an operating system one.
