If there are walls in the equation then there is no equation. What you need is an external 2.4GHz directional antenna with a huge gain on it, as 1KM is quite (although achievable) a range.

With line of sight you can do 10km easy :D

It depends on how you plan to connect to the campus. Do they have a wifi system in place that covers your area? If so you just need a CPE like a nanostation: http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=49_46&products_id=655

If not, you will have to buy 2x nanostation and put up one at your place and one at the campus.

yeah i think getting that would be my best bet. need to check my line of sight though as a few houses block it. Wouldn't want to have one campus as it would probably get stolen.

OK, if you find you got a good line of sight then i would advise you to follow the obove link, your best bet would most likely be a 15dbi grid antenna. IF you can avoid it try not to by a omi-directional antennal, out of experience i find them to be useless :)

Does the campus have proper outdoor Wireless APs? If they are only running normal indoor kit, there is no chance you'll get a connection.
