Hi All,

The openserv guys need plastic conduit to run my fibre line from the 2nd story corner of my house down to the first floor where I keep my modem. Mweb (who I ordered my fibre from) say they don't know anyone who can do it - but that I can get an electrical contractor to do it.

Does anyone know electrical contractors with the experience in Cape Town (Rondebosch)?

I would do it myself, but apparently even a 20 mm plastic conduit pipe bend is too much of a bend? I don't want to install to be told it is incorrect.

I've just heard that fibre goes :

Fibre Cable -> Converter box -> Cat5 Cable -> Wifi Router (Free from Mweb)?

Is this true? Then I can just run Cat5 from the Converter Box to the Wifi Router?

How often do I need to restart the converter box?

Any electrical contractor can do the conduit for you.

Yes, you can have the ont & router in different locations, uses normal ethernet. I prefer to keep everything in the same spot.

Or you can get the flexi conduit... used it this weekend to install an AP for a client. Used shielded CAT5e inside the conduit which is not the most flexible so I'm sure you'll be fine with fibre.

Builders sell it but you can get it cheaper at an electrical wholesaler - connects to regular conduit using a conduit coupling

As others said, any electrician can do it. The fibre can go round normal conduit bends no problem.

My install goes:

Manhole at street -> Fibre (inside conduit) -> Termination Box (mounted on wall) -> Fibre patch lead -> ONT / Fibre "modem" (mounted on wall) -> CAT6/Ethernet for PPPOE (in conduit) -> Router -> CAT6 cable for LAN.

I have my fibre termination box and ONT in the garage. Then a CAT6 cable to my router (inside the house).

ONT can be anywhere, but the router (with WIFI) should be in the best place for WIFI coverage.

Has anybody seen them install a face plate type termination box?

I have existing conduit inside the house connected to Telkom infrastructure which is only accessible through wall mounted face plates. So I am wondering if Telkom will install fibre using that.

They'll just bend a notch in the faceplate to get the fibre through and hotglue the termination box to the wall.
