do I need to have my UTD connected to USB to check signal strength (properly) and which tower i am connected to?

and if so, what software do i use with it?
Usually the lights on the UTD gives indication of your signal strength, Crash's program works on either USB or ethernet and the iBurst Terminal program (it comes with the Windows drivers on USB only).

I've been having intermitedly crap speeds lately, it is fine at the moment but was really bad most of today, are these kind of jumping speeds usual with Iburst (Maby on weekends only?) I was wondering if this is maby a local CTP problem, anything lately on your side Mr.H, even though I would expect brilliant speeds in Plumstead.

PS: Seburn, have you tries my P2P suggestion yet and does it work for you?

Ekhaatvensters, Speeds have been good here in Plumstead the whole weekend, maybe you are getting the "capped" IPs like I said in another thread.

When you notice that your speeds are very slow try disconnecting and then reconnect to see if it makes a difference.

To be quite frank I am really starting to get pissed off with the way wbs are running iBurst.

iBurst is a good system but wbs do not seem to have the staff to run it properly.

Thanks for the help, I've been getting 700-950kb lately again and I did switch IP's, but that didn't really seem to help at first. It was the same for a few minutes after I switched IP's and then went right again os I'm thinking it was just a bad connection/WBS problem. On the whole the service isn't realllt that bad though, I'm shure uptime is actually better than ADSL if you have a good stable connection, like you say, Plumbstead tower rocks , always connected! I dont think many people connect to the tower though as most in the area cant afford it and the rondebosch, newlands and constantia (rich people) crowd arent covered by it so it's in a pretty good spot for us!

Yeah it's a good uncongested tower and hopefully will stay that way until wbs get their act together.
Still I have been told by a reseller that the tower has the most clients here in CT, it seems we are/have been lucky up until now going by what the poor sobs up north are saying.

I am beginning to see what they are complaining about and certainly hope that wbs are also taking note of the screwup they are making of a perfectly good system like iBurst.

But going by previous experience I think they will also screw it up down here as well sooner or later.

Hi guys...

1) Tower: The Castle... Kyalami
2) Signal: 96-100%
3) Major Pros:
a) Always on
b) Better than dial-up, didnt go thru the isdn stage
c) decent speeds, even while capped. sometimes when WBS screws up the BW manager, i even manage to get 100kB when capped (rarely)

4) Major Gripes:
a) Latency - would love to play some games online, but alas, no success
b) on some days there are a few disconnects... but this isnt a big one.

lowering the costs of BW would be a god-send.

I'm happy with the connectivity... but Iburst must seriously jack up on the delivery/turn around time of responses to their clients

Currently located in Hyde Park but connection is terrible as signal strength fluctuates up and down :(

Will not move to teleskum for all the money in the world!

Would definately like to see an increase in bandwidth from 3gig to say a 10gig or so :D

The best tower I've been using is the one in Forest Hill (Gillview) down in the south, had no problems for 2 months and every single download came down at 140kbps!!!!

no in hyde park I'm only getting 60k :( but I'm not worried as I just use it for online gaming :D

The only reason iBurst is more stable is due to the fact that they don't enforce disconnections every 24 hours ...Telkom does. Other than that I'd say adsl is currently a far more mature and stable system.

Come November I think there are going to be a whole bunch of new complaints regarding adsl disconnections ....

I've been testing out iBurst for the last month (borrowed a friend's modem), and I'd be really happy if it wasn't for the P2P throttling. I get a good signal, the web is extremely fast, and games are okay. But I can't live without eDonkey, and the 9GB option is too expensive, so I'm not going to sign up. :(

Finally got hold of WBS Helpdesk WRT continuous disconnections. I was told to download DrTCP021 run it and change my settings as follows:

TCP Recieve Window: 255555
Window Scaling: Yes
Time Stamp: No
Selective Ack's: Yes
Dial (RAS) MTU: 1352
Path MTU Discovery: Yes
Black Hole Detection: No
Max Duplicate Ack's: 1
TTL: 64

Any comments?

I ahve no idea if this will work, but will keep you guys updated.

I'm happy with my ADSL 384... been up for almost 7days with 0 down time besides the 24 hour reset... Downloads are good, most of the day, shaping pisses me off sometimes, now if i could only get the price to come down so i can get a faster line...

I have never been so disgusted with any single product as I am with iBurst. I have a slow but steady degradation of service. From full 1mbit pre-launch to 300k MAX. generally i get sub dial up speeds. The new Roodekrans tower is almost right above me but I have no LOS so Northcliff is the only tower I can see :(

iBurst technology doesn't use line of sight alone. It can function on reflected signals as well.

There are p2p apps out there that aren't shapped.

ahem another with an excuse to change the MTU

Ahem, this was recommended by the Help Desk. No excuse, I just want a product that works.

Which coincidentaly it deosn't. Complete waste of time as I am still being disconnected continuously.

If you have a fix then share it.

Yes, but the signal drop from reflection will make the signal weaker than to almost any BS that is in line of sight.

In my case, the nearest BS is Sandton, followed by Rosebank, both of which are within 2km of my house. But the BS I connect to is Randburg, 7km away, because I have direct LOS. I can "see" signals from Sandton and Rosebank, but both are less than -100db, whereas Randburg is -71db. Even Bryanston and Northcliff (both LOS) give sub -100db signals, and they are even further away than Randburg.

So you can't underestimate the benefits of LOS.

Hunting about the property in the hope of finding such a reflection with a directional antenna has only given me a bit of sun and fresh air, nothing else... well, maybe a reflected Northcliff signal, at most. :)
