We use version 9 of the older Corporate Edition, but will be changing soon over to hopefully NOD32 for our network. I was asked to look into just getting a new version of Symantec AV, but for the very reason you've described I've turned it flat down, which was only one of many the reasons.

Half of our computers are still Pentium 3's, with limited memory, 128MB to 256MB. No way can they run SEP.

As most people would say, get away from Symantec. There are far better products out there.

We use SAV 10 and stand alone 3rd party firewall installed on each and every PC/Laptop.

Majority of our equipments are leased from Dell (eg, Dell D620-630 Laptops with 2G Ram).

Yup, agreed with above. (AshmanX)

Get away from Symantec.

We are migrating over to McAfee, works good so far, no seriaaas issues :)

except one - it flags winvnc as an undesirable program - yet we use it... (only the client portion)

But ultr@vnc and tightvnc's unaffected, so there's no worries :D

SEP is really a pain, it really tends to kill a pc due to its memory usage. I'm lucky that I have a rather highend system so it doesn't affect me that much but I find that I normally disable SEP when I have a lot of mail to download, purely because it takes so long to scan messages and I don't have that kind of patience.

I think half the problem is that Symantec built up such a name for itself that people wouldn't think about other vendors. There was a time once when Symantec products were actually useful and worked, but then the quality just died. They also started taking over companies and killing products off, things that started the ball rolling in the mass migration away from them. Partition Magic comes to mind...

@ wcoetzee

Check your Windows Event Logs, I've read that SEP has had major unsolved bugs that caused it to start pouring useless errors into the logs, possibly slowing a pc down even further.

Also, start making a plan to migrate away. Do some research and costing and get a replacement put into a budget for your next financial year.

McAfee and Symantec kills our laptops at work, and IT will not listen - can often take up to 20 minutes for the boot-up scans and related AV rubbish to finish doing what it's doing, and you can do nothing but wait. Even tried killing the process in task manager, but doesn't help...

Took McAfee off the home PC too, as it was a resource-killer - running Avast v4.8 Pro now and works a charm - easy to make changes, is not intrusive and I now have the fastest boot-up time I've had in ages!
