Why ADSL is broken in South Africa

I tried their Twitter option once & got a reply the next day~ roughly 12hrs after logging my tweet.

When I was with Afrihost I would Tweet/DM them & I would get a reply within 5mins...

Enough said

Afrihost said it does not have sufficient data at the moment to offer comment.

Jan, what is happening at Afrihost? They were all over the show on social media and marketing and present here. They seemed to have gone completely quiet. Only tweets about silly lolcats.
Gian also seemed to have disappeared into thin air.

The last time they issued any formal news, IIRC, was late last year when they told they world they with great fanfare that they fixed everything (stopping short of world peace!). On my side little changed, though.

Time to investigate, maybe? Something seems rotten in the state of Denmark.

Well its broken here in the UK too...so definitely not a uniquely ZA problem...

“One should never rule out the fallout from load shedding and the subsequent impact on user hardware such as routers and modems.”
Doubt it has such a big impact it has to be mentioned. The line faults may be one thing but it seems poor service levels are mostly down to the ISPs themselves.

But you guys have cable and fibre internet dont you?
The situation isn't as rosy abroad as we may think. Sure the pricing is good and the speeds great but they complain just as much about quality as we do. You are also either in a high density areas with lots of options or an outlying areas with minimal options.

Haven't seen any cable tbh. My main apartment has fibre...but where I'm currently its 8mbps ADSL...and the line is super unstable so not a big fan of British DSL right now...in fact I'd rather take my 4mbps ZA ADSL over this piece of sht.

Uh, we pay for that account just like everyone else. The context of the article is that the Afrihost account showed poorer performance on 40Mbps DSL than the Telkom test account.

And we have covered the issues being experienced at Afrihost: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/114552-afrihost-network-problems-explained.html

Keep in mind that the article linked above came after months of hounding Afrihost for information about what was going on on its network.

We also asked them to comment on the issues covered in this article, but they declined to offer any.

So stow the veiled accusations, please?

Maybe that's why Afrihost is slow? They haven't bought sufficient data for everybody?

Well in my case Telkom IS the actual ISP (so other providers cannot be blamed) and the service (query response) is shocking. I am actually trying (without success) to do an upgrade. I was so frustrated from the lack of response, I logged it with Hellopeter - still no joy!

Openweb cap ran out? Of course we know there is nothing wrong with openweb :D

Telkom tried to sell me a new product 10Mb/sec ADSL on the next generation network. One catch - you have to use Telkomn Internet. I accepted the challenge and it took 4 days just to get the login out of them - which did not work. I tried getting Telkom Internet support at 6:50pm on a Tuesday night - no support number on their website. 10210 told me it was outside business hours - cvall back tomorrow. I did - and cancelled the service. What kind of ISP has absolutely no technical support that early in the evening?

In the process of moving across to Neotel Broadband.

My 4Mbps line is currently syncing at 512Kbps ... Mostly it disconnects and reconnects at different speeds a few time an hour.
AH is not following up with Telkom, and Telkom is blaming everything but their own network for the instability.
Everything was roses just 8 days ago. How I long for the good old days (8 days ago).
I will simply cancel everything by Wednesday. The lack of feedback and follow-up from both companies is shocking and disappointing.

The article did not state that MyBB was paying for the account, and it probably should be added for clearness. So it was an assumption and an incorrect one on my part.

FYI, Afrihost is going through the same performance problem at the moment for the last 2-3 months. They also can't update their status page according to the rep, so it shows green all the time.

I’m appreciative for Telkom network upgrades because it solved slow network speeds I experienced between 4pm and 10pm. If they continue their aggressive maintenance project everybody will receive better service. It would help to be patient and let them finish their work.
In the meantime I’m cautiously optimistic that fibre will be available in my area before the end of the year.

Same issue here - takes about 30 minutes of rebooting the modem every couple of minutes before it will settle at my maximum. Issue has definitely worsen over the last month or so. The modem will disconnect and start syncing at random times, regardless of it being idle or in use. Could my modem possibly be faulty?

My line downstream SNR drops from 18db to 11db every day from 5PM till 7AM, this is on a 6mb profile. Over the last 2 months, my sync was all over the place. I got Telkom to recreate my port two or three times, made sure no trees or bushes were touching my telephone line in my garden, changed filter & tried a new router. The speed it syncs at now is a constant 6mb, but the SNR still goes whack...
