Why are more cheap second hand advertised on Autotrader than AA Autobay?

For the past couple of days I have been searching for a car to potentially buy, a second hand car around the R35 000/R45 000 price range. I have noticed that there are 10 times more cars advertised on the Autotrader website than on the AA Autobay website. Why is this? Why do people choose Autotrader instead of AA Autobay to advertise their cars to sell? I know that AA Autobay do a thorough check on a car, could that be a reason? Because right now I am thinking of only considering AA Autobay cars since they may be in a better condition on average than Autotrader.

Well AA do do an AA check on the car.. yes, but thats it.. nothing you can't organise on your own really.

I don't like AA Autobay personally, since I started to list my car on the site, and after that they wouldn't stop phoning me... at least 3 times a day, and that just irritated me.

My guess would be autotrader is free to advertise while AA Autobay requires you to pay for the vehicle checkup.

Autotrader is not free.

But autotrader probably gets a lot more hits then AA Autobay. If I were selling my car, for sure i would put it on page where its going to get more hits.

Agree with you Pox.

Sly21C,
If you really want to buy a vehicle through Autotrader, why not ask the seller to do a AA check. It's like R400 and could save you a lot more down the road. If your really interested, offer to pay for it....

AA Autobay ripoff

This is the main reason:

All of the above for a mere 2.5% Facilitation Fee on the selling price of your vehicle, with a minimum R2500 (exclusive of vat). This amount is only payable when your vehicle is sold.

Why do they work on a percentage. The work for selling a R50K car is the same for selling a R500K car but the fee is increased from R2500 to R12500.
If I sell my car throug Autotrader, then there is no fees except the advertising fee.

Same problem I have with estate agents etc who always take a percentage.

Hopefully from a private seller since it's a bit cheaper, and i'm thnking of buying a Tazz, but i saw a conquest which looks good, although i'm not sure what the diffirence is between a tazz and a conquest.

Go to auction. Saw a Conquest sell for R20k a few weeks ago.

Recommend you go the day before with someone who knows their cars to check the engine, accident damage and such. The cars are sold voetstoots.

Because a normal car dealer charges a markup based on the value of a vehicle. Why should AA autobay be any different. I do like the fact that they facilitate all the paperwork and finance hassles, yet you still get the benefit of setting your own price and selling semi-privately. I can guarrantee you will get a better offer from AA Autobay than from trading in your car. Much more than the 2.5% fee that's for certain.

AA Autobay needs time to establish itself in the market and also the R600 odd for the AA check to list is a bit steep. But if you can get an extra R20k for your car, it is worth it.
