Why are my upload speeds so slow on Afrihost?

Test conducted on Mon Nov 28 21:40:53 2011

Download Speed: 4472 kbps (559 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 95 kbps (11.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 243 ms

I'm just about ready to cancel my account with these guys because they simply are not interested in helping me solve this. I have done test after test with them, provided all the information I could possibly be expected to provide and yet I still can't upload at any speed considered acceptable.

Is there maybe something in my router that needs to be adjusted? I am on a 6140/644 line.

I had a similar problem today. Rebooted my Linksys router and speeds went back to normal. Also Afrihost.

I have no problem surfing, but torrents are 26KB/s

reset router did nothing

This has been going on for weeks for me. No resolution to my tickets or my complaints via hellopeter.

I have rebooted the router several times and it has made no difference. I'm using the Telkom Mega 100WR router which I have had for over 4 years and its not let me down before. Telkom have checked the line and confirmed that there is nothing wrong with it.

I really don't know what else I can do other than close my account and try to find an ISP who can provide me with the service I need. :(

Where are you uploading too? Internationally or locally? Locally you should get full line speed. Internationally is usually downgraded to slower uploads for some reason. On my 4mb line i have similar issues on WA/Afrihost and Axxess, even on unshaped accounts, but upload to a local server and its full speed on all ISP's.

Usually to my dedicated server in the USA. I haven't had any problems in the past - it's never been blisteringly fast, but it was at least usable. At 7KB/s on a 6 meg line I a think there is something wrong with the network. Download speeds are not a problem.

Incredible account is about 50% better. Last time I tried my WA account it was very fast.

Buy some prepaid data from a few other ISP's and test.

All day long I am having connectivity issues with Afrihost. One minute I'm on, the next I'm off.

It may only be costing me R99 a month, but it's just not worth it. I'm convinced they are trying to bump those of us who got those cheap accounts off their system.

Lucky you. Which of their accounts do you have? Mine is the 10+1 @ R99 per month account. Downloads are fine, but uploads are worse than dial-up. Now I had to switch to Incredible Connect because of the other connection problems. :(

I am sure it is Afrihost's issue. I get better speeds on Incredible Connect and even better speeds on Web Africa.

But, I suppose I will keep the account because it's at least 11B's for less than a hundred bucks. I can switch to WA prepaid when I need to upload a lot of files.

With Afrihost and most other ISP's they implement a fair use policy which is calculated over a 10 day roll-over-window. If you download regularly more data than the average user, then your internet speed is reduced until your average usage is below the average user's usage. I was limited down to the point that general browsing became near impossible. If you want more info, then contact me :)

That should surely not apply to capped accounts. What difference does it make if I use my cap in one day or 30?
