The prepaid package does not allow for any valued added services as there is no billing profile and CLIP is pre-provisioned on all prepaid SIM cards,” said Vodacom.
Reads like a Monty python script. Vodacom just be honest and say because profits

“Vodacom’s contracts are airtime, SMS, and data centric. Any additional service to a contract package is considered a value added service (VAS) and CLIP is considered a VAS,” said Vodacom.

“Naturally, customers are charged for value added services, should they wish to activate them.”

Vodacom's response sounds a lot like the answer to the question of why a dog licks its balls: Vodacom can make money selling ice to Eskimos and therefore Vodacom does charge extra.

Vodacom's contract customers should not be surprised when they experience a bit of buthurt.

MyBroadband therefore asked major mobile operators in South Africa

Cell C take note, you are a minor mobile operator in South Africa, you are not worthy.

@Jamie McKane can we please have a news article explaining why some service providers charge for itemised billing.

Shows you again prepaid is the way to go with these providers. Contracts get raped hard, prepaid gets real kisses before & cuddles afterwards..

That's what I have on my Cell C/minor operator invoice, I don't pay for it but it can change anytime since it's a "discount".

I don't believe we have to pay for such a trivial thing like CLI. IMSMW, used to be free...

TL;DR version: Because we can charge for it.

They are fooling us - they make a ' million ' percent mark up and still charge us for a VAS ? I will give them a better idea. Start selling R5 bundles to prepaid customers, just to get CLIP on a monthly basis. The networks are getting away with murder wrt to their high service fees and charges and if it was not for government to intervene wrt data prices, I am sure they will just continue to rip us, the consumer, off.

I can give you a guarantee, if the market allowed them to charge CLIP on prepaid, they would have found the technical way. Just like they used to have an airtime 'window'.

Haha a few weeks ago my boss gets a new contract and thought it was a setting on his smartphone that wouldn't let him see numbers, told him: Nope sorry boss, you have to phone Vodacom and ask them to charge you R10 extra for that luxury.

customers are charged for CLIP as it is considered a value-added service
Charging for a service that at the most costs a few extra bytes of data, ridiculous. maybe back in the day it made a difference, but now, the cost to the operator must be negligible.
