Why can people from the UK get 150 ping to here, but we get 180 to the UK?

My questions is exactly as the title says. I have plenty of friends from the UK who get 150 ping to any of our local servers, and yet when we connect to UK servers, we have a minimum of 180. Why is that? And if there's a way to fix it, how would one go about it? Could our ISPs optimize their routing to achieve lower ping times?

I get 160-170ms ping to LoL EuW on ADSL, friends on Fiber here get about 150-160ms to UK. It has to do with the last-mile Telkom infrastructure.

It also depends on which ISP you go with, e.g. on mweb and cybersmart you get 150-156ms to UK in cpt, but on Crystal Web (IS) the ping sits at 160s most of the time.

If you're on interleaving that could also add an additional 20ms or more, but thats only relevant to adsl.

No... they all have pretty much the same route.

Local infrastructure. It's crap but the servers are ok. So it affects us to there but not the other way around.

You also need to be very clear about where you and the servers you're pinging are located.

London to Cape Town (or the other direction) is around 150ms between the ISP data centers. To Joburg you're looking at around 170ms via CPT and 180ms via Durban.

You can also have between 5 and 30 ms additional due to the ADSL line depending which generation and modes your line uses.

ANC vs First world country.

We have copper they have fiber and lte everywhere

I'm obviously missing something here, but how is providing you with fibre the ANC's responsibility? I thought it was private business that has to put in the infrastructure, or do you see it as some kind of socialist entitlement?

Data collection, packet inspection for shaping, all sorts of stuff that happens before your packets leave the country.

OT but they've put lots of obstacles in the place of private business.
