I needed to pull a torrent yesterday and recalled that I deleted Azereus from my system because I got tired of the loading time and the Java bloatware and ten zillion add-ons you needed before it did anything usefull.

So I downloaded utorrent and was surprised at how small and well written it was.

Why can't all programs be like this.

I also use it, it's amazing. It's got all the features of Azeurus, but it's 170kb instead of 8MB! Truly amazing, it also runs a helluva lot faster.

Could anyone possibly explain in layman's terms how uTorrent manages to be so much smaller?

I also use utorrent, and the first thing I noticed when installing it was the small footprint and overhead. I deleted all other torrent programs off my machine after using utorrent for about 2 minutes

Yeah Azeurus is a resource muncher.... Also hogs up 5-10mb of data for updates.. before it starts running properly. If yur running 4-8 torrents at one time.. your gaming will start to get choppy...

The executable is packed (UPX afaik) so it's true size is not 170K probably in the order of one megabyte :).

Afaik the chap who wrote it just used normal C code and the Win32 API and no MFC, Java or .NET bloatware addons.

So basically it's compressed from 1MB, but even so, it's a fraction of the size of Azureus. What gives?

PS: Man, that's good compression to get it to 1/5 of it's size.

Utorrent 1.6

Not that I use any Torrent for that matter, I noticed the program was updated to version 1.6 on the utorrent website on the 1st of July 2006 here. :)
