There is no such a thing as a legal adult. That implies that some people are "illegal". How is a person "legal" or "illegal" ??? That makes no sense.

The correct term is the age of majority.

Ok. Thanks.

You might want to do this to get them on your medical aid.

Most medical aids let you have a "kid" up to the age of 25, so then it becomes problematic if you have a 19 year old stepchild who you want to put on your medical aid.

Also the legal age for emancipation is 21, not 18. Your parents have to provide for you up until that age, you can't act as a legal entity before you are 21 either... so its quite odd that you can't be adopted.

Perhaps you can assign guardianship though ?

The correct term is a legal entity... meaning that you can act in your own capacity as an adult

According to the amended CHILDREN'S ACT 38 OF 2005 the age of majority is 18.

No it is not. Blu is correct.

A legal entity refers to a entity which derives its status from some law e.g. Companies Act.

EDIT: I see you are also confusing emancipation with age of majority. Two very different things.

Scary how people get confused with legal terms and then very adamantly insist that they are correct :D

So, let me see if I'm still on the same page:
Legally, an adult is defined as a person who has entered the age of majority and is able to enter into contracts. They are legally responsible now in the sense that they can act in their own accord and are not subject to parental rights any longer.

In South Africa, the legal age is 18, as per the Children's Act of 2005.

A legal entity is a non-living organisation that derives legal rights - for example a body corporate or a company.

Emancipation is a little vague for me: the right to be declared free to make one's own decisions? I could use some clarity there.

Pretty much spot on. Think of emancipation as a tool that a minor can use to get himself/herself declared to be a major (adult) and thus having full contractual capacity.

A good example of this would be ...errr... Justin Bieber. He has extensive rights (to royalties etc) and obligations (to perform music etc) akin to being a major, and which would necessitate him being a major. He then approaches court to be declared a major.

Therefore one could find that a person of 13 (or however old Bieber is)..is actually an adult.
