Why certain Afrihost customers will not get free speed upgrades

Several Afrihost customers will not be able to get the free fibre line speed upgrades on offer as part of its newly launched double up promotion.

Last week, the ISP sent an email to certain customers in which it indicated it would double their fibre speeds for the rest of 2020, as well as for January 2021.

“You can double your fibre speed for no extra cost for the rest of 2020 (and we’ll throw in January as well so 2021 can get off to a great start!),” Afrihost said.

Sounds like convoluted hot air so until people says they've actually been upgraded I don't buy it.

Just to correct the article.

We are now offering the free double speed promo to clients even with Price overrides.

These are existing Octotel clients before the Octotel Price increase, MFN clients that might have a price override and existing SADV clients that were migrated to Vumatel.

Clients can now request the free upgrade in clientzone. These clients will be presented with the terms. If you opt in for the free double speed promo and choose to downgrade after the promo then the catalogue price (monthly price as shown on the website) will apply.

If you choose not to opt in to the double speed promo then you will keep your current price override.

This promotion is an Afrihost promotion and we will be paying the Fibre network operators their full prices in terms of line rental fees and interconnect fees. Clients with price override are already subsidised and a price subsidy as well as a free double speed promo is not possible.

For the double speed promo we have included as many clients as possible and the majority of our clients will be able to take up the offer.

Unfortunately clients on Vuma Reach/Mitchells Fibre, Clients with legacy packages that no longer exist or clients that does not have a valid upgrade path will not qualify for the promo.

We are seeing a huge demand for the free upgrades. A lot of clients has already been upgraded across all Fibre network operators. This can be confirmed in the Pure Fibre Feedback thread. :)

It's a complete scam! Starts off pretending to be a gift of double the speed and then it sneaks in the fact that you will start paying for it in February. Very underhand and misleading.

I upgraded on the 29th of September. Unless speedtest and downloads are lying to me, it seems to be legit.

My upgrade also went thought without a hitch. From 100/100 to 200/200.
With the price of a 200/200 the same as 1000/100, I will be switching to that in Feb as I don't actually need the 200 up.

On 2020-07-17 I received the following email from Afrihost:
Today's the last day to let us know if you want to keep your Double Speed Fibre (and get the August upgrade for free).

No pressure though.
We do just need to know today so we can complete our billing run for next month.

So if you want to get Double your speed going forward then please click the link below.
And you'll only pay an extra R160 per month for the full 20Mbps+.

And you also won't pay anything extra for the month of August even though you'll be getting double your speed.
We were on 10/10Mbps at the time with a free COVID-19 upgrade to 20/20Mbps and decided to go for the offer.
Sounded fair to start paying for the speed we were using.

Speed was upgraded, but I was invoiced the full amount for August.
Contacted Afrihost support, and was assured that this will be corrected, but it never was and I paid full price for August and the following months.
So keep an eye on your billing for this offer...

To add insult to injury, I later learned that our network provider (Frogfoot) was not ending the free double speed upgrade end July 2020 as some other network providers.

Now there is another upgrade offer, but this time round I was not even invited!
Not cool Afrihost!

I told my brother about this promo. He's using a legacy package. We sort of read between the lines that it would work something like this. We both agreed it wasn't worth the risk that he'd lose his current pricing structure. Turns out we made the right call.

This is a great deal for someone that was planning on upgrading anyway, but pretty easy to get burned if you weren't.

I personally still have a VDSL Line with Afrihost. Until Vumatel finally realizes that a 2Mb upload speed on their entry-level 20Mb package is an absolute insult, I have to hold onto my 20/5 VDSL line.

What's sneaky about it??

Why not pay the R60pm more for 20mbps upload?

With all due respect, if a promotion requires walls of text to explain the conditions of the promotion (your post and the article burned a lot of words trying to explain the promotion), it is overly complicated and should be simplified, preferably down to a single unambiguous and concise sentence.

Morning,

If he is on a legacy package the solution would be to upgrade to the next package after the legacy package. Wait for that to complete then opt in for the double speed promo. This method will work however he will not be able to revert back to the legacy package after the promo.
