Offices are basically monotonous too. Anyway most people don’t have a separate space in their house.Just to respond to that particular point: Living in an apartment makes working from home very kak. In a house you can maybe assign a certain room to it, but in an apartment you're basically in the same space all the time and after a while it becomes quite difficult to be productive in such a space.
I count that among the big downsides of the office.An office you still get to walk around and socialize etc.

Look for those people it must've been horrible, no dedicated space for work, kids running around, I mean I've luckily got a biggish sized house so I can use the study and my son could work in a different room. This is one of the problems for a lot of people, they would prefer going back to the office as they get a "space" to work.Unfortunately this is a problem for some. I have my on office at home, where I can shut the door if need be during meetings. But not everyone has that - but there are ways to work around that I believe.
I think parents have it worse; kids around the house all day (when not in school) can be an issue.
Part of me wouldn't mind it if it was twice a week, but I'm not wearing a mask, if they do this and want us to wear a mask I'll be like no. Wearing a mask for a few hours here or there is okay, but freaking 8 to 9 hours no.
Yeah there are, companies need to realise things have changed, open space offices aren't the way anymore thanks to COVID. My boss was also almost exposed when he went into the office, luckily he tested negative.I don't think I'd mind too much with a hybrid approach. But yes, the wearing of a mask all day would be a deal breaker for me too.
Someone I know was called into the office on Wednesday (He normally WFH 99% of the time) - turns out he was exposed to someone who had COVID at the office and now he is showing symptoms. So there's also those sort of risks, too.
And usually their bureaucracy makes performance monitoring nearly impossible in spite of having everyone working in a huge office.All banks and stuff invested in real estate, all old school with lots of manager levels.

They definitely need to be worried. We’ve already completely closed one office. The people who worked there will continue working remotely and the company will arrange a basic environment for the occasional in person meetings.Ah yes, an investment firm that definitely has no vested interest in any property.
The arguments are indeed nonsensical. There are certainly physical skills that are easier to learn in person, but anything involving creativity, knowledge and such can be done without ever meeting in person.So can't practice it, so what is the point of them imitating it? Also why can't this be done remotely? Had an intern I mentored for three months pure remote this year, worked pretty well (software).

Having better control when people are in the office is mostly a fantasy. The larger the company the harder it gets.All of those can be measured with work output, give them a warning, should be sorted, same issue if they were in an office.
I agree. We simply figured out how we would work around the very few obstacles. What amazes me is how all these companies fail to see how dysfunctional modern offices are. My most productive job working in an office was one where we each had our own office. And that company had them already when I started there because their existing staff had demanded an end to the ridiculous open plan design.I doubt the problem is sitting in a one room apartment. Essentially when it comes down to it, an office is just a one desk apartment where people spend 8 hours of their day waiting for the clock to hit home time so they can go sit in traffic and drink a beer. Your problem here isn't the grads, is your culture.
Our phone support and sales people have had no problem working remotely. They work remotely with the customers anyway, on the phone, video calls, e-mail and instant messaging. When sales people meet with customers it is never at the office anyway. The guys who handle the hardware configuration and installation now do the configuration from home, then take the hardware to the customer to install it. The majority of those customers don’t need most of their staff in the office either.It wasn't like that across the company, but in any department where concentration was key, working from home always showed a more positive output. Roles where talking to people and ticking boxes were the main action (call centre, sales, field operations) a decline in performance was observed and they had to return to the office.

How is that noisy environment different to the normal call centre zoo? I’ve had this issue with call centres for years. And having been into them I’m amazed anyone can hear anything.That aside, the companies doing WFH for client facing services really need to improve the equipment issued to employees. There have been numerous times I've called into a support center (banks, online store, etc) or a sales department, and the WFH person answering is either on horrible loudspeaker and difficult to hear, or has background noise (music, kids/baby, other people conversing), or has static interference from a bad quality connection, or a combination.

This is the major issue for idiotic companies yes. Companies that still think "on-premise is more secure than cloud" are dumb.
