Why did you choose a router over a modem?

I am curious as to why so many single pc users have chosen a router over a modem. I can understand those wanting multiple pc's connected to one ADSL line, but why have so many single pc users gone the router route?

From what I could see routers are more expensive than USB modems and are essestially unnecessary.

I've heard of quite a few people saying that usb modems are also unstable or the connections they make are unstable. Appart from that my main concern would be expandability. Spend money now and save money later ;)

USB modems are the pits, if your have one and its working without any problems, good for you. Because those things need software and drivers to be installed makes them very prone to stupid windows problems.. Routers have their own built in software and there is no need to install nething. plug your pc in, set up router, and your online.. itll save u alot of trouble in the future..

Well, I got one for free.

But other than that, it's convenient when you use mutliple PC's and multiple OSes, which I do.

For those wanting to run a USB modem on linux it's going to be a lot harder as well. So that's a reason

When they start talking bout forward ports etc i get confused.Modem seems great for me.Single user.Only one in the family who uses pc...mainly

Because USB simply sucks for highspeed comms except for keyboard/mice (Firewire is far better) and the ADSL USB drivers sucks CPU cycles from your PC to do it's job and merely for a few R100 more you can get a dedicated appliance with firewall for the job.

Penny wise pound foolish comes to mind.

USB sucks for Linux... the majority of Linux firewalls have better support for Ethernet modems than for USB modems...

...and yes, integrated firewall helps a lot... especially if you forget to turn your windows' PC's firewall on again... :D
