Why do people generalise gay men as Effeminate?

I've always wondered about this.
A guy is gay and is called a queen or girlfriend or the media portrays him to have female traits.

Yet, most gay men I've met aren't anything like that. Some yes, but not most.

Also, why would the male to female affiliation of gay men not be the same for bisexual men?

I'm asking questions, but making statements too. I don't think that gay men are women in their true nature.

I don't really understand this post?
It's called effeminate.
Thanks :)

I beg to differ though. From advertising to movies I've seen this opinion of gay men to be prevalent. If the general public doesn't believe so or not, I wouldn't know. I just know what I've seen.

I agree with you, which is why this is so strange to me. It's also nothing new. I've heard people refer to their gay friends as being a 'sister', which kind of proves my point with this thread.

I don't... Unless he is obviously trying to be more feminine than females.

I have a gay friend who does his hair, threads eyebrows, etc but still dresses like a guy, talks guy stuff and does guy stuff (mostly) so he's a he.

Because the queens are the more obvious ones that stand out. The normal gay men just look normal so you don't notice them.

And people don't generalise them as female just feminine. There's a difference.

9/10 gay men are feminine.

8/10 gay woman are butch/big/manly. (the other two are the ones who appear in movies :p )

That's my experience in meeting them - and I have friends of both orientations.

I don't think it is that high. I just think you don't notice the more normal ones.

Since we are on a Friday thread. Why do some gay men fake being more feminine?
I've seen it a couple of times. Normal guys, but when they come out of the closet their voice get all squeaky and they start acting more like the stereotypical gay guy.

Society still has a very old school view on gender roles, masculinity, femininity & sexuality.

It is probably to maintain these outdated views on sexuality.

I have met many gay men that are far from what is stereotyped in the media.

It is this whole boys like blue & girls like pink bullshit.

There is a lot of social conditioning & maintaining outdated views.

Masculinity is constantly measured within society.

One could agrue that masculinity is fragile.

The day the society /men stop measuring each others level of masculinity, use "gay" as an insult/joke & stopping using the F***** word to put each other down, is probably the day that these ingrained beliefs start changing.

Isn't it reversed? Most effeminate men are gay? Out of all the gay men I know, there is only one I can think of that is effeminate.

Not sure if is true....haven't tested my theory. :p

It's nurture. Most effeminate boys are probably told that they are gay from a young age so they end up choosing to be gay.

Last time I came across that was when I was still in school.

Oh yes and my father calling me that when I was 19 for getting earrings.

What is eyebrow threading? Lol. Like dreads on your eyebrows? :D

Thanks. I chose the wrong word. Feminine is what I meant.

I'm not sure, but I'd think changing or acting this way due to your sexuality kind of defeats the point. Why would you act feminine if you like men? Then it means you like men that are feminine or not?

I'll be honest. The entire spectrum of modern day sexuality has me confused. I don't even know what most of the designations of sexuality mean.

I just came across an incident here at work about 20 min ago.

This morning in the xxxxxx area three ladies were discussing school. One started ranting about kids being taught that it is ok to be lesbian/gay. She said that this messes with the kids moral compass. The hatred in her voice was really unsettling. I was appalled and left immediately . Although I am not naïve to think that people don’t think like this, I feel that they should keep their hatred to themselves.

And the above is what I reported to senior management, in writing. If people want to share their racist and sexist views at work, I report them.
