Being an ex WISP client i was wondering...............

Why do people still join a WISP?

They are not the cheapest anymore.

Any comments..........

1) Because you do not have any alternative in the rural areas - no ADSL access
2) In the cities you are anti-Telkom and would get service elsewhere

1. How many area's is there still without adsl? It cant be that much.
2. In the citi's you say, all Telkom has to do is your installation then your isp takes over.

Look at the majority of farming areas surrounding towns that have ADSL - only choice is a WiSP

Telkom dialup lines connect at 9.6Kb/s on farm lines ie old SOR18 carrier systems (if your lucky)

True.... And cable theft is a big issue.... but i was more aiming at persons staying in town and with ADSL capable exchange

1) high speed access, especially upload speeds. (perfect for voip, ftp)
2) No need for Telkom, can run all your voice over wireless
3) On net traffic usually free as it doesn't terminate at the ISP
etc etc

It all sounds good. But the Cost to it because most of the wisp's is now more expensive than a telkom line with an ISP.

Example: I'm paying R900 per month for my 4mb uncapped account line rental included. The avarage price for a wisp
uncapped 512kb/s account is between R649 and R1750. The same 4mb line with a wisp is anything between R2499 - R5000 per month.

Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

Correct but at the same time WISPs do have their place. Most wisps host their own ftp, torrent,dc++ servers so there is no real need for uncapped. People only really need around 3Gg-5GB for average browsing, gaming, emails etc.

Unfortunately there is a huge difference in quality from one wisp to the next. I think its difficult for a wisp to operate at the low end of the market. The cost of running the backbone and bandwidth is high which will result in higher costs. But WISPs need to be clever and differentiate themselves from ADSL.

One of my clients is running a small wisp. Running 4 x 4MB adsl lines and proving farmers with access to internet around the underberg region. We for example specialise in high speed wireless (5Mb to 40Mb). I suppose providing wireless to your average mybroadband customer is difficult as cost per GB is important.

I put it down to the service levels the high end WISPs offer their clients.

I thought we'd take a hit with the new ADSLs, but our business growth has increased since the new ADSL services were launched.

Since the new uncapped ADSLs were launched, we've lost one client. That's it. One.

The guy in question was one of those who hit his connection 24x7 downloading movies and stuff. He had a 256Kb uncapped link, averaged 249Kb in the time he was with us and would call us at 2:00am if his link went down. He was a real pain who then demanded that he be refunded for the two weeks that he didn't use our service. We were glad to refund him his R125 and see the back of him.

I've since discovered that he moved to a Cybersmart package where he gets 384Kb for R199 a month.

There are those who chase the best deal and there are those who like decent service, like to know that the people who provide their internet connections are humans and not faceless companies and who are willing to pay for it.

EDIT:
For R700 p/m, you can get a 3Mbps + 6GB or for R800, 3Mbps + uncapped from AMOBIA. Once Pta is covered, thats where I'm taking my money.

Wireless is better than ADSL?

Ive been complaining about our wisp for ages. (wifi through screamer)

We operate a hotel in the Drakensberg mountains. Wireless is our only option. 3G and DSL dont exist here.

One of our regular guests works from home. A few weeks ago he used our hotspot when he was on holiday for a few days. He thought our connection was fantastic.

He lives in Bryanston - at home he uses 3G and ADSL. He says both are slow, especially during the day.

Now I don't complain so much.

No ADSL here (not listed on any rollout plan), no Iburst here (cannot even get an estimate from them), no Wimax here (no one has heard of the town), no 3G here (Vodacom and MTN says they will never upgrade here), only a WISP that sells bandwidth at 25c a meg. No other choice but to bite the bullet or move.
