Why does Afrihost prefer us to use Putty for web servers

I have a self managed web server with Afrihost. I had no idea how to start using it so i emailed them and they said i should download putty. I did and the program is complicated so i phoned them and after a 20 minute hold i was assisted and but still i could not make it work so i googled and found a popular program called File zilla client. Within 5 minutes i was saving files on my web server.

Is Afrihost telling customers who want to self manage their web servers to use putty because its complicated and hope they change to the expensive package that they manage on your behalf ?

Putty is pretty common for servers, especially Linux boxes.

Putty isn't complicated.

I'd recommend mobaxterm though if you do a lot of unix work from a windows box

I would see it as two different things, putty to run more command line requirements and filezilla for simple basic file transfers.

I don't think self-hosted is meant for you at this stage.

Putty is life.

If you just need to transfer or edit files on your server, you cant go wrong with WinSCP.
If you have never heard of putty, self hosting is not for you.

You can rsync, so then yes I presume you can then, but I haven't tried it or seen it, but yes I would rather go this route than using putty, winscp, filezilla, etc.

Because it is simple to use for us ordinary okes. But, if you are on a strategy to bigger things, then you need to do some reading about running file servers first. Blundering around uninformed is going to go with plenty of pain and anguish later.
